The LS400 had a complete course changing impact on the luxury market, you mention the W140 well the W140 to the W220 is the impact of the LS. The Prius mainstreamed hybrid cars. Both of these cars are some of the most consequential cars in history. You clearly hate Toyota, and that bias makes you totally blind to the indisputable impact they have had on the Automotive industry.

The Phaeteon is mentioned in college textbooks as an example of a disaster. No one wants expensive VW. Pierch was wrong. Unreliable AF, boring and they sold 16. This overlooks the fact it was a premium luxury product. No one cares it’s a joke of a vehicle in the auto industry.

The LS 400 reinvented it. Saying otherwise is just foolish.

I couldn't find your quote but you are absolutely right about big luxury SUVs being the new luxury sedans, did you hear that BMW wants to make something larger than the X7? That's to compete with...... Escalades size wise inside and out that you say are too big for average people. Can't wait to see what they come up with.

Never said they were too big for everybody, just that they were too big for me. A larger BMW would also still be unibody and have car suspension so it wouldn't be truckish like the Escalade.

The X7 is too small inside to be a family vehicle to me, the GLS is that little bit larger and it makes it more appealing. I would get an X7 to daily myself, but to replace the Pacifica I wouldn't even consider one. I think the next gen X7 will just be bigger.

I can still see the appeal of the GX and LX. If you want a luxurious off road based SUV but want something more reliable than a Defender, GX. LX if you want something luxurious and BOF but not as big as a GM SUV. TX is a great family 3 row near-luxury product, but not enthusiast level or on par with a X7 or GLS or Q7 etc

One of the clearest impacts Lexus had is pricing. The fact that german luxury sedans are on the whole significantly cheaper still today than in the 70s and 80s is because of the LS400. They made a DRAMATIC course correction between the W140 and the W220, downsizing it and dramatically lowering prices completely because of Lexus. V8 engines became standard in US flagships entirely because of the LS400. Mercedes, BMW both totally overhauled their whole dealer and customer service platform entirely because of the LS400.

Think about optitron gauges. Overnight everybody had optitron gauges....including the W220 S Class. Thats remarkable, that Mercedes Benz would take a design cue from an upstart that was just a year or so old when the design phase for the W220 began. The only other company that is an upstart that has had that big an impact on the industry I can think of is Tesla.

LS400 would be top 5, or maybe even top 3 IMO.

I didn't mean that the way it sounded btw... But people love these huge vehicles bc they're so spacious, which luxury sedans.. they're just not like that anymore like we talk about. The Denali has so much room in it inside it's insane, I love it. I cant imagine how ideal it would be with a bunch of kids and gear to haul around, I definitely see why BMW wants a bigger one.

LX, my Denali is better let alone a true competitor like the Escalade IMO. GX, bleh. I'd take one if given one but they don't do much for me. There is not one Lexus new that I would buy today now that the LC is dead. I used to lust after each and every one of them in the 1990s and early 2000s.

Off the top of my head, these are the top 6, in no particular order...lets call them the most influential 6 cars from 1990 to today.

Ford Explorer
Lexus LS400
Toyota Prius
Tesla Model S
Lexus RX300
Lincoln Navigator or Cadillac Escalade

The Navigator/Escalade is a tough one. Navigator was first, Escalade took off better.

The RX is another one, it really launched the whole "luxury crossover" concept.

If we go back 50 years we have to include the Chrysler Minivans

I think a lot of it is space and also practicaity.

Denali is much bigger though. I would buy an LX before a Yukon just for the more manageable exterior size. GX is super enthusiast attractive.

I agree with all of these, but I would say the Escalade FTW in my opinion. The first one was a joke but the second one was quite nice, was insanely more powerful than virtually all competitors.. it had 345hp 380lb/ft, in 2002. They never have been able to keep them on the lots.

Yes, Dodge Caravan definitely goes on the list. I'm not sure if I agree on the Explorer, there were Bronco IIs, smaller SUVs. I might replace that with the Chevy Tahoe on the list. The Suburban always was and always will be a huge seller but what a good idea-- a smaller one and more options across the GM lineup.
