IMO, Lexus lost its way
Amazingly Lexus/Toyota saw this suv market coming. The LX 450 wasn’t groundbreaking, pretty much a rebadge but it quickly became the best selling luxury SUV then. It was all the rage in the cool circles.
Going back to Toyota/Lexus the RAV-4/CR-V were the first unibody suvs. Game changers. The RX was the first unibody luxury crossover and doubled Lexus sales almost immediately. Today you have to credit the RX for the very luxury unibody crossover few have today.
The ML predates the RX by a year but was body on frame. They moved to unibody since the second gen.
The X5 was the first sporty luxury suv (they called it SAV back then for activity) being RWD based.

Wife and I had RX450h F sport that we loved. Moved on to larger vehicle (LX)
Other than maybe a TX 550h+, nothing Lexus makes moves the needle for us and we are a Toyota/Lexus family. We’ve had almost every Toyota/Lexus model pre 2020s
i believe the MDX was/is considered a sporty handling SUV but always read the X5 was more sporty than the MDX. Idk which debuted first.
Never is a long time. That said, around 2010 I began thinking about replacing my 2000 Tundra. I was sure it would give me reason within a couple years. Fast forward to 2026 and 300k miles... the damn thing still hasn't given me reason to replace it. So... maybe in the next couple years.
The wife thoroughly enjoys buzzing around town in her 2010 RX350. 100k miles, looks and operates like new. Folks can call it an "appliance" or whatever, but as long as the wife is happy it will remain her daily driver.

My co-worker leased the 1st gen RX. I used to tell him he got a car that copied the ML.
@SW17LS Your top six from earlier. Do you think S-10 Blazer belongs next to the Explorer? Remember they had the 2-door version first, then the Explorer came along and they both changed everything. At least, I think that's how it went. Long time ago.

that's considered cruel and unusual punishment by some.
man you must really love your job.
wow... that's an old 'un... has it been reliable? it really had a bad rep when it came out.
they had absolutely nothing in common, lol.
i specifically didn't want the eddie bauer trim (with the hideous green and beige, lol), but maybe they'd already dropped that when i got my 2006 or 2007 - i had the 'limited' trim.

(Mom)... still have 1st gen ML 320. Has somewhere close to 250k miles. I changed oil on it last summer.

The Eddie Bauers came in all the colors but they all had the tan under trim and the tan interior. The green was the color they always used in advertisements, That was VERY 90s and people loved it!
