General Car Conversation - 2026 Part 1
So has anyone been paying attention to used car trade in/retail values of gas guzzlerzz Both used and new?
So far no knee jerk reactions, but i do see stellantis pay your sales tax on some models but nothing insane.
Evs have gotten magical 7500 discounts like honda.
RRs is doing price protection....for our 1%ers

I can't imagine diesel truck sales are too hot right now.
Almost 30% of recent new car buyers were underwater on loans for their trade-ins, according to new data released Thursday, Jan. 15 by Edmunds.com.The group said 29.3% of trade-ins that were used in new car purchases were underwater in the fourth quarter of 2025, which means the owners owed more on their existing vehicle than it was worth at the time of trade-in. Edmunds said that figure represented the highest share of underwater car buyers it has recorded since the first quarter of 2021, when the group said 31.9% of trade-ins had negative equity on their trade-ins.
The finding comes as average new car prices have topped $50,000, according to Kelley Blue Book.

No, not really. I complained about it like I'm complaining about it now. I knew then it would go back down, too, because back then the country was not fossil fuel friendly and I knew that was gonna be a disaster. I didn't rush to the Tesla dealer to buy an EV.
Exactly, that's all I was ever saying.
They'll come down a lot faster than you think.

This is the truth, it’s one thing to say you would do a thing and another thing to do it. When you go out and buy an Escalade V and drive it 1,200 miles a month with that FE and gas at $6+ a gallon we’ll talk. Until then it’s just talk and I’m betting you wouldn’t be as happy to do that if you were actually doing it as you think you would be. You could go buy an Escalade V tomorrow but you don’t have one, why? Because you don’t want to spend the money.
And while I understand what you're saying about mounting bills, if it started to affect my life I'd just eat out less or not order $50 of pizza every Friday...

I would happily drive it and pay $6 a gallon. You can go ahead and calculate the fuel cost and throw it in my face, please, I don't care. Again, did you see me bitching about getting rid of all my V8s when it was $5 a couple years ago? No. Bc it wasn't permanent then and it isn't now either.

Get that V! The ultimate v8!
And as much as I'd like to do that, I think the LC500 convertible is a better choice. We already have 2 SUVs and the Denali with the 6.2 is hardly a slouch.
We want a car to drive cross country, take like a month vacation. I'd lovvvvvvvve to do that with the Merc (I wish I had it in Vegas just to cruise the strip with it) but don't want the miles on it. LC500 I won't give a **** about piling miles on, it's a modern Lexus with an OLD NA V8 and collector/classic car wise the Mercedes is better.

if Lexus would have made the LC available with the current V8 set up where is loud and raunchy as well as a more subdued version with V8+hybrid like they did in the LS600 Lexus would have had a winner. Lexus made mistake
That total mileage is impressive.
Too bad the LC500 exist. No one in their right mind would pick the LC500h over the NA V8
BTW I drive way more than you think I do just for the record, about 12,000 miles a year easy. I feel the pinch too.
I don't have all that. You should pay car payments and then keep the car instead of leasing instead of just turning cars in. Is having what you have worth $2500 a month? That's a shitload of money for a rent payment, even if you have the income you do. Some people don't want kids, lots don't. It's about a 50/50 mix with our group of friends. Now we are all too old to have kids, I mean do 44 year old women get pregnant?
We all dropped a fortune in Vegas shopping, and the trip was very expensive but -- and I can't take credit for this -- my very bff since age 8 and who can give perspective better than anyone -- pointed this out. "Yeah, this costs a lot but it's cheaper than daycare. It's cheaper than diapers. It's cheaper than college tuition. It's cheaper than medical care for kids. It's cheaper than private school tuition. It's cheaper than feeding kids and their wardrobes and toys." She kept gong on. Not to take ANYTHING away from parents and parenting (and the friends' kids I love) but it's a vastly different life financially.
My friend ain't wrong.
So I guess my response to this is I agree, it does depend on individual circumstances. Which is all that's really been said in general?? You have mounting bills that are just a part of life. We have low overhead, no children, paid for cars, live in a ridiculously low tax state, and our income just jumped up alottttttt over the last year or so. I won't ever have to financially support my Mother or Father (divorced). Our house payment is a joke for being worth what it is. Money just piles up blindingly fast when you have a six figure household income, and where the first number isn't 1 either. Not trying to brag, just to give you some perspective, I love kids and hate that I can't pass anything down to any. Can't take it with you so yeah if I had a $1000 fuel bill per month who gives a ****. We already eat it in gas anyway just by going out on the lake. Dock fuel, GOD ONLY KNOWS what it is right now. I don't even wanna know lol. But we ain't selling the boat or changing our lifestyle bc of the dock fuel bill that gets debited every month, and never would.
You own older depreciated vehicles that are paid for, you have no kids, high income and you don't commute or drive for work...you drive very little. For you the cost of fuel is nothing. However, if you paid $2,500 a month in car payments, drove each car 1,000+ miles a month, had two kids with tuitions to pay for, had to prepare to send them to college in 7 years, wanted to take great family vacations while they are still young, had a mother to financially support to an increasing degree...you would be more like me and I bet you would think about the cost of fuel more.
