It will not fail in performance metrics. It's too big of a project to have failed basics. It might not be up to par with some competition just like how LFA wasn't up to par due to delays. We can be certain this car would be better commercial product than LFA ever was, it will sell a lot better. But will it be better than decade old LFA? Heck no. They are not even in the same league.
It certainly will NOT sell well at all.
Aston, McLaren, Lotus, Maserati, Bentley etc all can’t sell their cars. MB can’t sell the SL or AMG GT. The market for these non-core performance cars is very soft and u need massive discounts to move them.
Besides several hundred die hard Lexus fans - I see very limited market for $200-300 performance car from a brand like Lexus. They need to make a car in the Corvette price range that offers better performance and design, that would sell.
Speaking of Corvette - I can get amazing discount on new Z06 that has NA flat plane V8 that will most likely run circles over this LFR. There are HUNDREDS of Z06s sitting on dealer lots and now you got ZR1 with over 1,000 HP. Way too much competition these days.

While I agree with you I would like to say the GR GT may stand out more than the cars you listed.
McLaren has been copy pasting their same V8MR formula and most of their cars nowadays sell on lease "specials." Aston Martins not as beautiful as they used to be and in a way have always not really sold that well, and also they're mostly just AMG V8s outside of the V12s. The Emira is just a sidegrade from an Evora and expensive. The Maserati is a V6 and overpriced. The AMG GT is inferior to the previous gen while being more expensive and the SL is more stiff and too racy for the old crowd that used to buy them.
All new sports cars IMO while faster than before are lacking soul. If the new GR GT can stand out against them I'm sure Toyota won't have much trouble selling them, especially with the rumoured production cap at 1,500 total units.
I'm gonna reach really far with this.. really really far.
Buuuuut, this whole event thing has been teasing a joint thing with Century, Toyota, Lexus, GR, and Daihatsu.. I wonder if they're going to announce an expansion of GR as a sub-brand, meaning perhaps Lexus will now get GR-badged cars (ala, Lexus GR GT?) Considering the other brands have already gotten the GR treatment (Toyota, Century, Daihatsu)
I mean, what's confirmed is that this car will have a GR badge. Perhaps it might even just be a standalone GR model. Another forum hinted that these could be sold in Lexus dealers in their own section.. but.. I just don't know. We'll see what happens.
not a bad idea

The issue is that enthusiasts that spend that type of money on a car want to have a strong community where the Automaker is actually involved. They are at car shows, driving events, track sessions etc. BMW, Ferrari, Porsche all do this extremely well and have huge car clubs and various events throughout the year.
The other type of buyer that wants to be “noticed” is not buying this car bec the badge doesn’t demand attention like McLaren for example.
Lexus has done very little to build a community for enthusiasts and has never consistently invested in performance cars.

Correct, and this is why the car will succeed as a GR branded product as opposed to being a Lexus product. And not to mention with the GR GT being a GT3-first developed cars, there's your tie-in to motorsports. And historically speaking Toyota for the most part does do a decent amount of car shows/driving events at whatnot, perhaps not to the scale of BMW or Porsche but still something. At least here in SoCal.
lexus has waffled and whiffed ‘performance’ branding over and over. i think now it’s basically over.
they’re sponsoring imsa team but still…
Lexus should stick to making smooth quiet luxury cars....the performance stuff leave it for Toyota...What happened to the interior sound pipe in the LC500? Was taken out because it was so damn annoying.
