I would never use FSD for driving around in my area, or an area that I know well. I find it very helpful in areas where I'm unfamiliar, as I don't have to look for streets, especially those that show up as "unnamed". I also love it in congested highway driving.

I love to drive, but it's nice to have the option not to sometimes.

I think so. Including non-driving passengers (Robotaxi-like). For example: Driving kids to school and back every day is a major daily task in the lives of millions of parents. I know parents who would eagerly pay more than $8,000 + subscription for a true driverless vehicle. However, if the parent would still be required in the vehicle to supervise FSD.... much less useful.

Anyone download v14 yet? I read a quote from Elon this morning that anyone with Hardware 4 can activate it now via the main screen. I only have experience with v 13.9 or whatever and thought that was a mind boggling experience. I'll be back in Austin in a few weeks, hoping to get into a Robotaxi for a couple trips.

More details, a must read IMO.

The great thing about all the above points is that, they not just solve for vehicle autonomy, but also seamlessly transfer to Optimus, the Tesla humanoid robot. Here's an example of such transfer.
The same video generation models also work for Optimus robots navigating the Tesla gigafactory.
I don't think many people appreciate how profound the above is. Tesla isn't just trying to solve vehicle autonomy this is generalized autonomy the only difference is the robot it happens to be operating in.

i just don’t see how other ‘traditional’ automakers stand a chance.

Oh the traditional automakers will be fine. Every car made isn't going to be a Tesla.

if they dont build their own, they will license software from someone else.

there are some chinese companies being advanced with their models and licensing it out...

Question is - what Tesla gains by being maybe 12 months or 24 months faster?

As we see in case of EV sales, they gained a bit but did not manage to capitalize really since now everyone else is gaining share much faster.

There will be others that come along. My concern is they, in an effort to catch up, will move too quickly and deliver a poor product that might be dangerous and get autonomous products banned. Like the early days of FSD. Not sure how some of that was allowed on public roads.

that will put them at a price disadvantage. i’m imagining a self driving ram truck, using software and sensors and cloud the company doesn’t even understand. what could possibly go wrong.

a related question… in a few years we could have all companies offering ‘good enough’ self driving, so what happens then? maybe it’s a bit like in car navigation. yes all cars have it but most oem systems still stink. i think there will still be differentiation. just like tesla fsd 14 can not only drive to a destination but park once it gets there.

i think tesla has charged too much for fsd. even give people a first year discount or something to get people excited about it.

as far as gaining share, it’s easy to double your share when you’re at 1% than it is when you’re at 30%.
