Well you are wrong, the 97+ is Cathode backlighted, It looks much better than the 92-96 style and much better/cleaner than the aftermarket LED retrofit for the 92-96 does IMO (ive seen both side by side), the 97 cluster has the extra gauge that shows the MPG etc... and on the automatic has the standard shifter pattern the same as 92-96, the 98+ is similar but has the gated shifter pattern.

That's some good work there.

There's no question that the cold cathodes look better than the older stock bulbs in the earlier models. I happen to have three clusters, my original which is modded by the one and only O.L.T. (Nice job, BTW Brian) A most excellent CL vendor, as you all know, and a saviour to the failing clusters and needles in our cars. I have a 98 SC400 from Gazi, and a 2000 SC300 from the wrecked 2000 SC300 car I bought (Once again, many, many thanks to Gazi). Gazi gt me the whole car. One of the best vendors on CL, period!!

I planned on trying to do the following:
  1. Re-wire my pre-98 SC400 TT project to fit the 2000 SC300 Cluster. Because the SC300 cluster is Cold cathode and has the gated shifter markings to match my 4 speed gated shifter swap.
  2. Remove the tach from the SC400 98 cluster and wire and install it in the 300 cluster, so the tach works.
  3. Or, get a tach module that can adjust the 300 tach to read correctly on my V8.
After careful consideration of the potential work involved, I decided to wait, and sent my cluster back to O.L.T. and have him update the white "32" background and the "blue" needles with the matching mcd brightness. The blue needles resemble the ISF, and the cluster is nice and bright. I did not have to mess with the tach, and that was one less complication I had to spend time and energy on for now.

Ryan,

when you say rewire the dash, do yo mean you're going to swap out your 93 harness for a 97+ harness? Does it have to be from a sc400 or will a newer sc300 harness work?

I meant to retrofit my 93 harness to fit the 2000 harness. Similar to what you saw in this thread. I would have to basically marry the two harnesses together.

Since I never went that far, I cannot really answer your question. I do believe either will work, but there are many issues to address.

Thanks,

Ryan

I have the whole conversion done. If you guys need the wiring info, I can post it here. It might take a while or if I learn how to scan it onto Clublexus, it might be easier

How can we help?
Do you have a scanner at home or office?

On Which Year Model harnesses do you have the conversion sorted out?

just a tip up for whoever is crossing clusters from a 400 to a 300.
if you havent swapped the tach board, you may want to pull your needle before you start driving around (unless you don't care about the old board). the needle can go way past redline and mess up the old tach board. those little + and - wires inside that connect to the needle get all stretched up and can short out here and there.

I have the cold cathodes in my 97 sc300.. sadly i dont like them because of the orange needles.. i would rather have a OLT 92-95 LED blue needles and 32 white background.. if anyone knows if its possible to switch the orange needles out on the cold cathodes cluster that would be great. or else im willing to trade if someone wants to build me a harness to downgrade.
