Nearly 600K Toyota, Lexus Models Recalled Over Blank Instrument Panel Problem
In affected Toyota and Lexus vehicles, the 12.3-inch digital instrument panel display can go completely blank at startup or while in motion.
While there are a few automakers out there that are known for dealing with their fair share of quality woes, that historically hasn’t been the case with Toyota and Lexus. However, the rise of modern technology has led to a few teething problems along the way, and as such, we’ve seen a few issues pop up as of late, with some leading to recalls being issued to rectify them. The latest pertains to the 12.3-inch instrument panel display present in select Toyota and Lexus models, which has now prompted a recall involving more than half a million vehicles.
In these affected vehicles, the digital instrument panel display may be blank when the owner starts the vehicle, which is obviously a big problem, as it means that the driver can’t see vital information such as vehicle speed, check engine lights, and more. This can also increase the risk of a crash if the display goes blank when the vehicle is in motion, which can apparently occur as well.
In terms of which vehicles are impacted by this recall, well, that’s a pretty large list consisting of a total of 591,000 units in total. Toyota didn’t specify model years in its recall release, but we do know that it began implementing this digital display into 2023 model year vehicles of many types. In terms of specific models, that list includes the Toyota Venza, Crown Signia, RAV4, GR Corolla, 4Runner, Camry, Grand Highlander, Tacoma, and Highlander, along with the Lexus LS, RX, and TX.
As for how this problem can be solved, Toyota plans to either update the display’s combination meter programming or replace that part entirely, though no official remedy is ready to go at the moment. Owners of impacted models will be notified starting in mid-November, after which they’ll receive another communication when a permanent fix is available.
In the meantime, those who own one of these vehicles and want to see if they’re impacted by the recall can do so by visiting the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website and entering their vehicle’s VIN, or by calling 1-888-327-4236. Customers can also contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331 or Lexus at 1-800-255-3987, referencing recall number 25TB08.
