Lexus UX Awarded Top Safety Pick
New SUV swept six categories that evaluated safety and crashworthiness.
One coveted award that car manufacturers hope to get is the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) Top Safety Pick. This year’s winner is the Lexus UX.
To qualify for the Top Safety Pick award, a vehicle must earn good ratings in six categories: the driver-side small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraint tests, as well as a good or acceptable rating in the passenger-side small overlap front test. The vehicle must also have an advanced (or superior) rating for front crash prevention and a good or acceptable headlight rating.
The 2019 UX swept all six categories. This is not surprising as Lexus has often received accolades for its safety and dependability from the likes of J.D. Power, Consumer Reports, and others.
When tested by the IIHS, the SUV avoided collisions in track tests at 12 mph and 25 mph. The forward collision warning component was also given high marks.
IIHS did note that the UX curve-adaptive headlights were much better than the base headlights. This was mainly because of excessive glare from the low beams. Both headlight systems have high-beam assist, which automatically switches between high beams and low beams, depending on the presence of other vehicles.
