Lexus NX Overtrail Exists, but Strangely Enough, Is Only Sold in Europe

Equipped with a bevy of upgrades in several areas, the Lexus NX Overtrail seems like a natural fit for the U.S., though it isn’t offered there.

Lexus rolled out a new trim with the debut of the redesigned 2024 GX dubbed the Overtrail, which adds a bevy of upgrades in a variety of departments, all aimed at one specific purpose – to make the SUV more capable of handling tricky off-road scenarios. The LX is also now offered in Overtrail form as well, which raises the question – why doesn’t Lexus offer this same trim in some of its smaller, more affordable crossovers and SUVs, particularly in the U.S., where customers gravitate toward that kind of thing? Well, they do – sort of – in the form of the Lexus NX Overtrail.

The Lexus NX Overtrail does indeed exist, but for now, it’s only sold in Europe, strangely enough. However, it’s also worth noting that the NX Overtrail isn’t quite as serious in terms of the equipment it offers compared to the GX or LX Overtrail models. On the outside, those include some distinct styling features including black roof rails, door mirrors, fog lamp surrounds, window moldings, and Lexus spindle grille – which features a gloss black mesh coupled with a black stainless steel surround.

The Lexus NX Overtrail rolls on a set of black 18-inch alloy wheels as well, which are wrapped with Dunlop Grandtrek all-terrain tires. The Overtail gets a 15mm (or 0.5-inch) lift to help accommodate that more aggressive set of rubber, too. In terms of paint colors, the Lexus NX Overtail gets six of them, coupled with one signature hue – Moon Desert – and a gray Lexus badge out back. Customers can also opt to add accessories like a tow hitch, roof boxes, and bicycle carriers, to boot.

Inside the cabin, one will find Overtrail-exclusive features like Tahara Black synthetic leather seats, along with khaki bolsters, armrests, door panels, and headliner stitching, plus Bookmatch woodgrain trim inserts. There are plenty of luxurious items as well, such as a 14-inch infotainment screen, wireless phone charger, the Lexus Climate Concierge System, heated and ventilated front seats, and ambient lighting with 64 colors to choose from (including 14 curated by Lexus to reflect “different modes inspired by nature.”

Additionally, a special Trail Mode driving mode has been added that automatically optimizes the suspension and settings to cater to specific conditions. The suspension utilizes Adaptive Variable Suspension, which responds to changes in conditions as well, working in harmony with additional rear performance dampers. In terms of powertrains, the Lexus NX Overtrail can be had with all three available in the current NX lineup – the NX 350 gas setup, NX 350h hybrid, and NX 450h+ plug-in hybrid, but all-wheel drive is standard, regardless. All of that sounds like a package that would sell quite well in the U.S., but for now, at least, it’s unclear if Lexus plans to offer the NX Overtrail here.
