Look in the FAQ sticky (link below) under interior on how to remove the rear seat, that is the only way to remove the subwoofer.

Attempting to DIY is good but removing/reinstalling the rear seat to install the subwoofer may create other problems. Make sure you are replacing it another ML subwoofer.

I was thinking of going after market, but I don't know the specs of the factory amp. I want to get a sub that has almost the same spec as the ML sub. any suggestion? would the process be harder to do than throwing in another ML sub?

Because the ML system is a fine-tuned system that works in harmony with itself and it's components, I caution changing anything from stock. The ML system is ridiculously good and I can't imagine changing anything that would throw the whole thing into chaos. crossover frequencies, wattages, etc all work in harmony.

That's something I would do however it would require a good bit of information about the original sub. Is it a dual cone or single and is it driven by 2 ohms or 4 ohms. Is it a free air sub or does it require an enclosure. Only a qualified car audio professional would know what would be a suitable replacement that could come close otherwise it can be a disaster. JL subs in the mix of a ML would be like crap in your lasagna.

But as DevH stated (and I 100% agree), would you still rather go aftermarket if it upsets the delicate balance? FWIW, there are plent of ML factory subs on ebay for anywhere from 200 bucks and up.
