Advice needed regarding engine start noise...
I have the start-up clattering intermittently - my car has 77k miles (2007). I would like input from those that have this issue - it's covered in a number of threads:
https://www.clublexus.com/forums/gs-...ine-start.html
After going back and forth with Lexus corporate, my local dealer has decided to cover the parts for this TSIB repair but not the labor. They will charge me $650.00 for the labor. They claim the parts are ~ $900 in which I checked with Sewell and that is about right.
Questions:
Should I have them do it?
Does it need to be done?
I am worried it will come back and then they won't cover it again. Then what?
Should I put it off and try adding 1/2 quart of Lucas synthetic oil stabilizer next oil change which has helped for some?
Any other thoughts?
Thanks

Its not going to go away.
The oil stabilizer is a band aid... use it if you don't have the $ right now and save up.
Otherwise, get it fixed. Its cheaper to go that route than to have an independent shop do it anyways.

From my understanding it's more of an aesthetic problem than something that would ever do any real damage to the car so it's up to you to decide how much it sounding normal is worth to you. Correct me if I'm wrong, anybody.

The failure rate of engines that make the noise has got to be higher than those that do not.
SO... how long? You can wait and see... and if it fails, you'll be out a lot more $ than the cost of labor; additional component replacement cost, vehicle depreciation, etc.
Over half is warrantied and you're out of warranty? Sounds like a win for you, my good sir.

Camshaft gears leak down oil. Think about it this way, the timing chain assembly will not be operating to its designed intent and the 'rattle' is metal on metal.

What I wonder is why those engines are fine for a long time and then spontaneously develop the problem.

My car was making this noise yesterday at start up, I have CPO so I assume it would be covered. Anyone have any advice how to get the repair done? I know the dealership always wants to duplicate the issue or they don't fix it. Any advice is appreciated.

Make a video of it happening to you, show it to them... make sure you show your odometer and vin in the video so it proves its your car. Can't see how they can argue with that.
