Lexus: The Secret Compartment

A secret is best left untold... until now. If you ever have things you want to keep just for yourself, here's a compartment for you.

This article applies to the Lexus IS (2005-2013).

Andre Malraux once said, "Man is not what he thinks he is, he is what he hides." Everybody likes to have a place to put things where no one else can see. Whether it is a privacy matter, or you just want to protect your belongings from the naked eye, a secret compartment in your Lexus is just a very cool thing to have.

Let's face it, we can make a secret compartment out of anything. Some people like to cut little compartments in the trunk, some might make a little bag that is sewed under the seat, and some might go as far as welding a compartment under the vehicle. These options are all very nice and secretive, however, they require a lot of work; they also require altering your vehicle's factory composition and possibly affecting your warranty.

Our secret compartment that will no longer remain a secret to the Lexus community is located on top of the dashboard. The best method of hiding something is to put it where no one thinks to look. The best part about this secret compartment is that you don't need to cut, sew, or weld anything. It is safe to say that your Lexus IS will remain as clean as it has always been.

Materials Needed

  • Card
  • Small cup
  • Something to hide

Step 1 - Locate the speaker on the dashboard

Locate the speaker on the top, center of your dashboard.

Figure 1. Locate the speaker.

Step 2 - Remove the cover

As shown in Figure 1, use a hard card to pop the cover open. You don't need any other tools to remove this cover. It should simply and easily come off.

Step 3 - Install the small cup

Now that you've removed the cover, install the small cup that is now your secret compartment in the hole. The wires are below and should not be in the way. When you are done snugging in the cup, make sure it is the right length so you can close the cover. Put any "secrets" you want in there, then close the cover. Keep a card handy on you all the time in case you need to access your new secret compartment.
