I might purhase chrome 20" wheels for my LS400. I was wondering how much maintainence goes into chrome wheels and are they really troublesome? Does the chrome chip off over time? etc.

Well chrome wheels compared with other finishes.

Chrome is actually the easiest finish to keep clean and to clean. Just soap and water with any Reg quick wax will do the trick even quick detailer spray will do the trick. Now as far as chipping it depends on the quality of the company that did the chrome.

 

I love the chrome finish however, if you curbed them it cost mucho $$ to redipped them.

Chrome will peel off, high polish won't.

 

This is certainly dependent on the quality of the chrome plating job. Chrome plate, properly applied, will not have a peeling problem. I've owned 2 different sets of Lowenhart rims that were chrome plated ( centers and outer lips ) and absolutely no peeling any where in 5 + years.

High polish - you'll have to stay on top of that to keep it looking good, especially if you're near the ocean or live where roads are salted during the winter.

Like bluelex says, quality plated chrome rims are a breeze to keep clean.

 

Chrome baby! It just brings out the car even more. Having some low-profile tires to have the chrome ride is even better. To clean them is not a huge job to do neither. I suggest you keep your current wheels & tires so you can replace the chromes during the winter months assuming that you have snowy winters.

 

How about curbing chrome wheels? Sure you will suffer heartburn, but will a quality chrome wheel start to chip and peel at the area where it was curbed? In the event a rock hits the chrome face or lip will a quality wheel crack or peel?

What is easier to correct? A curbed chrome or curbed high polish?

Chrome

Pros: Easy to maintain, out lasting shine.

Cons: Expensive to repair if damaged . If damange occurs you have to rechrome the whole wheel which means lots of $$$.


High Polish:

Pros: Don't have to worry about chipping. If you curb them, you can alway get it repolished and get the shine back. Easier to repair. Less $ to repair.

Cons: Shine dulls after a while. Harder to maintain than chrome. Less shinny than chrome. Wheels are anodized (clear coated) to protect the shine how every if you wash the wheels with any chemical other than soft soap and water, it will stain the clear coat which can never get rid of.

I think I covered most of the pros and cons.
