Default Basic Oil Change

Hello UXers, this is my first post. Been lurking awhile but I signed up in hopes of getting some input from other UX owners.

My 2019 UX250h is now almost two years old. The Lexus dealership that sold the car did the first oil change at 1 year/ 6500 miles. It's now time for the second oil change which I will be doing myself. I see somewhat contradictory information on the subject.

The owner's manual states that the oil capacity is 4.5 US quarts.

It also shows a representation of the dipstick with indicator marks for gauging the proper oil level.

This representation indicates that any reading where level is above the mark between B and C (above) is excessive oil. (In the C zone)

When my oil was changed at the dealer, 4.5 quarts brought the oil level all the way up to where I have marked C (below)

My question for everyone: Where does the oil level come to on your dipstick when it is at the proper level?

Thanks,
Dan

No need to overthink, drain the oil put on a new filter add the amount stated in the manual. How do you know how much oil the dealer actually put in?

Dealers & oil change mechanics tend to have 50 gal barrels of the different oil types. They rarely fill from 1qt bottles. I bought a 5qt 0-16W bottle. I put all but .5qt in and it read almost to the end of your B range.

I got contradicting information from the dealership at the time. When I asked, the service representative said they would have put 4.5 quarts in. Then he said to go by the dipstick.

I believe I'll be changing the oil tomorrow if the wife will let me have the car for a few minutes. And provided I have the correct oil filter (90915-YZZN1). I'll know for certain where what amount measures on the stick then.

Oil change completed at 10 months, 7000 miles. I drained just over 4.5 qts from the engine. This proves that the dealership service manager was incorrect when he told me 4.5 qts were used. I had already removed 28 oz. of oil after discovering the potential overfill. As instructed, I went with the manual and dipstick.

I imagine that there are a number of customers that would have driven the car overfilled for a year.

I was pleasantly surprised that the oil sump and filter have such easy access, a smallish panel and four screws. Filter is down low where the oil draining from it has nowhere to go but into the pan. Hardest part was getting my floor jack slid in as far as the front, central jacking point. Had to use a second (bottle) jack at the pinch weld jacking point to gain an inch or so for the floor jack to clear.

This is the correct filter. The sump drain gasket (washer) is 0.48" ID. Those blue colored washers you see on Amazon are the correct ones. I used a FelPro 70822 but would not recommend them. They are plastic and if you torqued to spec, it would probably break.

I use drive on ramps that solves the jacking problems.

Did you wipe and reinsert to get a reading or just pull and said it was overfilled? For whatever reason, Toyota\Lexus dipstick are hard to read. sometimes you'll get two different reading if you flip the dipstick. My thinking is that the dipstick tube has residual oil causing some incorrect readings to mark on the dipstick.

If I was not clear enough, the oil level at the time I changed it was just slightly above the A mark. Very easy to read as the oil, with 7000 miles, was beginning to darken and *. I did mention that the level before I changed it was minus the the 28 oz I siphoned out last January, the day after the oil change a the dealer. I used a Power Vac with a 4 oz cup, seven cups full. I used a spray bottle straw on a piece of old oxygen cannula hose inserted down the dipstick tube. I would have taken another 4 oz out but my apparatus would not extend any further into the oil.

In summary, the vehicle left the dealership with 5.5 qts of oil in the crankcase.

* About the dipstick. If you sand the dipstick with some 600 grit sandpaper it will no longer have that "repellant" finish that does make the level of newer, cleaner oil difficult to read.

A side note about the same dealer. My wife's friend was driving her leased Rav4 to Indianapolis,170 miles away. Half way her car began smoking badly. The dealer technician had failed to re-install the oil filler cap bathing the engine in oil. not knowing what had happened, she had it towed to a close by Toyota dealer who rectified the issue and cleaned her car's engine compartment. Maybe we got the same technician.

Slightly over "A" is nothing. Most places will round up since 1/4-1/2 quart of oil isn't harmful. Being over towards "C" is a serious issue and neglect by the tech.

Hi all,
I am a Lexus Master Technician and I am creating a series of maintenance tutorial videos covering the 2019-2022 Lexus UX models.
Here is my video showing how to replace the engine oil and filter on UX250h models.
Please hit me up with suggestion on what other things you would like to see in the video comments.
Cheers!
Viktor

Well done, Viktor! This video would be useful to any first timer on this vehicle.

FWIW both of my brand new 2021 ES from the factory had the oil levels higher than the C mark and yep checked 5 min after shut down. doesn't bug me one bit.

Just drain all the oil out and pour in what the manual says. w/ a dry filter, it'll be the 4.5 qt per the manual. as said don't overthink it. the car is a very dynamic place and everything sloshes around continually.
