lwtr me take a stab at this, i live in NY too (westchester to be exact) Anyway I don't think it's at all illegal to drop your car. I believe you can do it as low as you want. However we live in NY. THe potholes are ridiculous. I wouldn't recommend anything too extreme otherwise your gonna find yourself bottoming out and your going to run into alls orts of problems.
Pros of Lowering: Handling improves ten-fold (The lower the drop the better the handling - lower center of gravity) It also looks hella nicer than an undropped car

Cons: Look above, bottoming out, the lower the car the more harsh the car will ride, this also depends on the spring/shock/coilover combo.

Be warned ahead of time, if your using the car in NY for a daily driver i would recommend staying under 2.0 inches f/r

In California, whether it's legal or not, they use the height of your head light to judge (please correct me if I'm wrong. heard it from a friend).

Default Go with L-Tuned

In NY, especially NYC I would not recommend 2" as safe...I have the L-Tuned drop (approx 1.25") with 17" rims and I bottom out once in a while, I also have to watch out for my TTE front spoiler on all steep inclines. Dont' get me wrong I wouldn't trade off the handling upgrade I have gotten from the L-Tuned...I just think you should know what you're asking for when you say 2" IMHO it's alot for NY/NYC.

Aristo....I've gotten pulled over for my supra looking too low last year and the cop determined whether I was legal by using his nightstick measuring from the lowest part of the car (this would have been the side skirts) to the ground. I'm not sure what that number of inches is, but he didn't give me a lowering ticket. With our lexus' we'll be fine even with a 2 inch drop as long as you dont have no crazy bodykit that is almost touching the ground.

a1exus,

I'll try and look up the NY Vehicle Code with respect to the suspension, if there is any on the books. I'll post my findings sometime on Monday.
