Default OEM Lower Control Arm No.2 related thread

If you got Daizen issues, GTFO.

jk, go to...
skperformance's "front suspension fixes and facts" thread

THIS THREAD IS INFORMATION REGARDING OEM LOWER CONTROL ARM NO2

Definition
Lower Control Arm No.2 is sometimes (usually) referred to as "tension rod"

Issue
Bushing in tension rod wears out as you drive, espeically on lowered car. Please refer to the link above for common symptoms and diagnostics.

Available Solutions
1) Get Daizen polyurethane kit. For information relating to this kit regarding the tension rod, please refer to the thread above.
2) Replace with tension rod with matching year arm.
3) If you have a 98-00 or 01-03, replace with 03-05 for beefier bushing.
4) get heim joint (which would be awesome)

Below is a comparison between 98-00 and 03-05 tension rods.

and you can see clearly the deterioration of the bushing and difference in size of the arm itself and bushing in my post here. I have successfully installed 03-05 tension rods on my USDM 98-00 GS.

Premises
98-00 have a skinnier arm
00-03 have the beefier arm (confirmed by gman44116)
03-05 have the beefier arm & TRD equivalent bushing

Part Number
These SHOULD be the same for the NA Lexus dealerships also. But please check before you order.

My Proposed Solution
Install 03-05 caster arms

Advantage/Disadvantage vs Daizen kit
Advantage:
No pressing in/out the bushing. Takes out the hassle of having to press it out and have the Daizen kit pressed in. Sure you can burn them out but I really didn't feel comfortable heating up a metal arm thats so critical. Replacing the arm itself makes it a weekend job.
Disadvantage:
1. the "feel". Even though the 03-05 arms are supposed to have TRD equivalent bushings, it's probably not as firm as the Daizen polyurethane bushing. So you will lose the "feel" (if you will). However, if your bushings are torn, should be a huge improvement anyways.
2. cost. I hate how Lexus marks up things. These arms cost about 50 bucks/side in Japan (assuming 1USD=100yen). I think they retail north of 250USD here in the States.

Note
All the OEM caster arm should have the bushings already pressed in if you buy Genuine Toyota parts. I researched the **** out of this, even went as far as calling TRD (originally to confirm the compatibility of TRD bushings with our GSs) in Japan myself to confirm but they kept on saying that they can't confirm jack for anything Lexus.
I believe the 03-05 tension rods you can buy from the Lexus dealerships here in NA have TRD equivalent bushings pressed in already as well because if you go to TRD Japan's site, it says that 03-05 S16x already has them and if I remember correctly, the parts number are the same between Lexus dealerships in the States and Netz Toyota Japan.
SO, I'm just cross-referencing from information I gathered from the internet, TRD, and local Lexus dealerships.

I'll leave it up to you to confirm anything I wrote b/c I may easily be wrong.

Installation
Open to update.

1998 and 1999 are the smaller arm.

2000 and up are the larger arm.

I have a 2000 GS and it has the larger arm...

I just picked them up from molini lexus today. They looked up the 30280's and they cross-referenced the 30281's. not sure if you could find the 30280's anymore..

Hey OP, did you mean to say that the 30281's are the ones with the TRD bushing. Your info is conflicting. It shows that the 30280's were not in production 03-05 and the 30281's were? Thanks so much for the research you have done on this, its going to help alot of people!

30280 were replaced by 30281.. basically they updated the part number or updated the part itself as in maybe they changed the manufacturer on them... it happens often in parts for cars...

So by the looks of the part number wise, they originally had 00-02 (mid gen 2GS) using a updated version of the arm, then they updated again in 03... then they don't make 00-02 anymore and since (it seemed like) 03+ fits into 00-02, they just used that instead.

I also find it curious that you can still buy the 30240's and they are more expensive than the updated design??!
