I have an '04 but I still have my worries. But does having aftermarket wheels and suspension setup play a part in ball joint failures?Originally Posted by GSteg
This is why i always emphasize that all 98-00 GS should get new balljoints, especially if you dont know if they're original or not. Putting the 98-00 balljoints next to the 01-05's, they look a bit different. All the 01+ GS i've done never had any play in the balljoint. It's usually the 98-00 GS that has some sort of play. Thankfully, the ones you buy from Lexus are the same ones as the 01-05 balljoints. I haven't really seen any 01+ failures. But who knows, there are always exceptions.
These are out of a 98 model.. I do not know the history out side of the Lexus history and the ball joints where never changed my Lexus but, I cannot say.
When I changed mine a few months ago I could not tell the difference between the new ones and the old ones. There where different numbers on them but I don't remember what the new ones said.
Gsteg is right but, Lexus is wrong for letting him be right. Toyota really needs to step up and make this right.
Here is another pic..

I'm not able to see any of the OP's pics. His site appears to be "parked by GoDaddy."
I recently picked up a 2000 GS 400--totally stock--from my father. Sounds like he/I got lucky. He tried half-heartedly to sell the car, and as part of that had a state inspection performed. They failed the car owing to ball joint wear, so he had those replaced. About 97k miles.
The front tires have a lot of wear on the outside tread blocks. Could worn ball joints have been the cause of this?

Supraboy..
Did you get either of your old balljoints back?
I would really like to see more closeup clear pictures of what you get back.
You can see mine above.. They have ALOT of grease..
I think this is really proving to be a lubrication issue.

Glad to see you are OK.
Same thing happend to me on 40 west @nc. I had just left the lexus dealer with an alignment and suspension check. They gave me a rental for 60 days and replaced the ball joint on opposite side because of their failure to diagnose.
Anyone hearing a squiling noise when turning at low speeds, that is inconsitent or consistent have them replaced OEM.
