Mike you might have seen some of the hundreds of Sirius XM spam posts that have hit the forums (lots of them, not just ours) in the last month or so. On CL we've typically caught them when being dumped on the forum and cleaned up within 5 minutes but has been a real PITA.
We've taken a number of measures to try to disrupt the bots including changing some of the variables in post timing like you noted above. I'll put it back once we're sure we've gotten rid of them for good.
