Well based on the fact that it happened to you I would say it's possible! It's not entirely impossible to beat the rated mileage providing you're easy on the gas peddle. Many Toyota / Lexus hybrid owners can match or better their car's rated mileage. That's what Toyota vehicles typically accomplish. It's not that hard to get at least 45 (US) mpg if you're not doing lots of highway and roadways are typically flat, no hills.

Warm weather not a lot of highway driving and 45 mpg is easy for us.

The initial mpg is always very high, but the more you drive the lower it will get, I have not reset my mpg in history for near a year now and it sits at 37.2, last year it was at 38 and over the Winter it dropped to 37. Anyway, no complains here

I see 50+ mpg trip summary notice if driving longer distance like 10+ miles at lower than highway speeds.
Otherwise when driving mostly short distances, A/C always on, it settled at around 34 mpg. That is on 18" wheels.

The same here! I did not reset the mpg since starting 2.5 years ago. It is now at about 37. The mpg goes higher after long (more than 700 miles trips).
My trips are usually short 1-5 miles mix of city and highway.

Hmm, I'll have to try tracking it over a longer time window. Typically I log the history each time I fill up.

Still, we consistently get 35-36 mpg with a mix of city & highway driving in a hilly, aggressive driving locale.

Try to turn blower fan off (of course if isn't to hot or too cold) and see the difference in mpg

I saw a combined average of 33 MPG.
The average speed on the highway is 80 mph.

You can get closer to 40 if your speed is in the low 60

For the benefit of those in the US, this translates to 33-39 mpg and 59 mpg when cruising at 45 mph.

All cars typically get their best mileage when the aerodynamic drag from passing through the air at speed isn't a major factor. Sub 60 mph speeds are best for gas mileage gains. Metric sub 100 km/h.
