PO440 can also indicate vacuum hose leaks. Pull the engine cover of (two 10mm nuts) and check out the vacuum hoses for cracks and being loose or off of their mating couplers.

This is what I would do if I were you.
In fact I was you, I was sure my vapor canister over my Gas Tank was leaking, but it turned out it was just the hoses under the hood. This is a VERY COMMON problem on the sc430.
$1000 bucks isn't a rip off for the work that you are requesting, just don't think you should go that route until you exhaust the easier (& Cheaper) stuff first.
i agree to check the hoses first.
i had that same exact code about a year ago.
for me, the fix was replacement of 4 evap hoses. i’ll let the invoice speak for itself…
owner of shop is HS buddy, hence no charge for labor! part no. on bag may not match the old hose inside.

Hi, are those 4 hose parts the ones you needed in particular or are these 4 part numbers covering all hoses?
I want to just change all the hoses rather than finding cracked one each time.
I got a code P0440, and I can faintly smell gasoline.
Local independent shop says they have to drop the tank, replace some seals/valves/hoses as the leak is coming from that area after smoke test.
$1000 estimate.
Thoughts?
get a second opinion. Trust none of these mechanics. I had a guy tell me I needed a new transmission one time. Knew he was lying . Took the car to another place and he said two screws popped out from the pan. Cost 100 bucks.
btw, I had the same evap code, one of the hoses popped off in the main bay from the timing belt change. He didn’t crimp it back on tight enough

hello, i’m pretty sure those are all the hoses because my HS buddy and shop owner has the same philosophy as you. if one is cracked, others are about to.
might as well change them all since you’re in there.
no codes since 🙂
