I thought the amplifier for the navigation is under the trunk panels on top of the nav unit . Not sure how you can tell its getting hot if it
is under the panels.

agreed, that’s why I was wondering what the person was doing and what did this person consider hot.
it is a 2003. Was working on electric antenna and having nav. issues, ( System not updating) So out come the panels. It was not hot enough to burn you but, hot enough you did not leave your hand on it for more than about 15 seconds.

i would need to double check but I thought that small NAV box was for voice...but not sure. When I replaced the NAV unit in my 2002 from the gen2/3 to the Gen4, I didn’t connect that box up to anything and my NAV is just fine.
When you say update, do you mean driving down the road, it is not updating?
if that is the case, you may have an issue with the disk or the disk reader in the NAV unit or the unit itself.
