Dash cluster compass setup for car that didn't have it originally
Recently my 2002 SC430 with DVD nav system dash cluster broke electronically. (That is, when it works, which is exactly once after startup, everything works fine. Then the second startup on, it doesn't work at all without unplugging and replugging the main connector).
So I got a replacement cluster off of eBay, which has the compass in the odometer portion.
Reading the owner manual it has a procedure for synchronizing it which I've done several times. However the compass only reads N and NW (although accurately). No other direction is registered.
The manual section does note that the compass is on vehicles without navigation system (that's the reason I noted that my car does have the navigation system). So I get that it might just not ever work, (dealer says not something they know about) but hey it would be nice to have the compass function.
So I'm wondering if anyone has successfully had this happen and figured out how to get this to work -?
Thanks,
Scott

Do you think your car might be missing the actual compass, because it has GPS?
or do you think it is embedded in the cluster?
BTW, post a pic of the cluster please.

I do think that due to the owner manual notation, the car does not have 'something' to make the compass in the dash cluster work. I just had no idea that there were two clusters for that car. Photos of the original and compass style guage clusters attached.

Is the compass not working not allowing you to do the switch over?

Maybe check out post #1 here, esp about his cluster.... https://www.clublexus.com/forums/sc4...h-ed-pics.html
Yesterday I found a thread in which someone upgrade their pre2006 (5 speed) cluster to post 2006 (6speed) and they had too many problems. They took it to a professional shop and after tons of wasted money and labor hours, it didn't work. I can't find that thread, but the above shows what fixing such an error entails. Which might be something you're experiencing.

Thank you ShawnOK. In the first thread it seems to indicate that the cluster has a mask over the odometer area that hides the compass display. I'll look at my old one. Maybe I can just swap out the mask if I can't have the functionality.
