the 06 has a much better resolution then the 02 I have the gen4 nav. installed. I have the 06 screen never installed it. would make it much better system.
That is not my understanding. I have Gen4 installed as well on my 02 screen and the resolution improved quit a bit from just replacing the Nav ECU and DVD.

Please reference where you got that info.
Like you, I also have the Gen4 upgrade on my 02. I agree this helped improved the resolution on my 02 display screen, but I think this is due to a change in the color arrangement. But for my taste, it's not nearly as close to the current Nav display on my aftermarket head unit which surpasses the resolution on the 02 OEM display. Several years ago I was informed by a very knowledgeable member the 06 screen had improvements over the 02 model. I have tried to find the specs, but with no luck. The closes specs I found from a website for the 2004 - 2006 resolution is 800*480.
So I have never understood what's better about the Gen 4 ECU and DVD functionality?? Can anyone list the major improvements over the Gen 2/3? Smarter logic? 3D?
Although there is much good information on this site, I suggest you ask Lexus about this. Too many people here give what sounds like an authoritative answer that just ends up being something they "heard" a few years ago.
I have an 06; Habious has an 02. I ride in his car a lot and have never noticed a difference in screen resolution, although some NAV features are a bit different.
I just learned that the newest map version for Gen 2/3 is v13.1 - no more new maps. Somif you want newer maps and POI's we have to upgrade to Gen 4. Also I found a video on YouTube showing the Gen 4 slip screen and other new features including separate contr les for each side and a compass information screen.
He's technically incorrect. He calls the button the "map orientation button" but it's really the screen format button. The map orientation button is the N button in the upper left of the screen. That changes the orientation of the map from North up to Direction of travel up. Most people prefer the Direction of Travel = up on the screen because it's more like what they're seeing out the window vs having to translate in their heads that as they head south the car indicator on the nav map's downward motion is equivalent to their forward motion as seen through the windshield.
There are a whole bunch of these videos on the Lexus site if you register with your VIN. The Youtube one linked above is an almost exact duplicate of one on the Lexus site.
