Thanks for the help with my speaker decision -- now, need input on updating the NAV.
I know the generation that I need to purchase (2/3). I've been to Sewell and found the latest version for my 2002 SC430 (v 13.1).
Funny, it seems you get either East or West. I think I currently have the entire US now. Do I have to buy both discs or is there just too much data now for the system to handle all of the US at one time?
Also, I've found the East disc at a crazy price of about $50. They claim it's new, etc. Most everywhere else (including eBay) the price is about $150 for East alone. Is the $50 a scam or has anyone had any positive experience with a low price NAV update?

east or west only refers to the POI . If your on the west coast you would want the West coast POI Mapping is throughout the entire USA the only diff is the POI
So, if I drive my SC430 to California, I can map/navigate, but not look up where the nearest Sonic drive-thru is?
That is correct. That's the only difference between the east version and the west version. If you think about it . It makes sense Why have POI for east if you live in the west. the POI are put in when the disc is updated. If there were both POI it would take up more space . That's how it was explained to me. The mapping software covers the entire USA . Many of the POI are no longer valid sometimes like gas stations that close or restaurants and shopping places close .That's why the upgrade disk is more important. Business's change faster then roads and highways .I cant tell you how many time I navigate to a closed gas station or a closed 7 11
On eBay there's a site that claims to sell OEM DVDs.
He's the only site that informed me that I could not go from v1 to v13.1 all in one step. I sent an email to Sewell, but so far no reply and I can't find a phone number on their site.
The guy on eBay claims I can load 6.1 -- and I assume I could then go to the latest version.
My wife has a 2001 LS430 which has the same nav generation as my SC430 and she's running v 7.1
I might try loading her DVD in my car and then updating her's to v 13.1
Question: If 7.1 does not work in my car -- am I screwed? I've read you can't go back....
Question: Is it necessary for the DVD to remain in the Nav unit to function?

That's why I love having my iPhone connected via Bluetooth to my audio system. While moving I just push the iPhone home button and say "Siri, please get me directions to the nearest gas station".
I looked a little more closely at the link that Dave provided http://www.lexusnavigation.com/what-to-order/) and the whole thing about having an "East Dealers" disk and a "West Dealers" disk ONLY applies to us with the Gen 2/3 navigation systems (02-04 SC430s).
So hers what I've learned.
When Lexus went to nav 11.1 it required a firmware upgrade since they went to 2 disc (east/west) to accommodate the increase in POI.
So the latest I can put in my 2002 without a visit to the dealer is 10.1
I called the dealer for a quote to go to 13.1 and it's between 250 and 375
Still waiting to hear from Sewell
