Unhappy broken door latch cable

2002 sc 430--interior door latch cable is broken at the ball. Is it possible to (purchase and) replace just the cable or is the cable integrated with the locking mechanism, requiring replacement of the whole unit. Also, anyone have any links to buy just cable and/or integrated cable/lock mechanism. thanks

Your best shot is probably to call Sewell Lexus. The parts guy there is really good about getting answers and their already low price (compared to other Lexus dealers) is reduced further for CL members.

You could use their Contact Form) or email them (LEXUS@SewellParts.com) or call (214) 352-8100.

Please take the time to circle back and post what you find out on this thread to help people in the future.

I think some on our forum had this issue and was able to repair it. I think he drilled out the lead ball and then ran the cable through and then pinched the ball to hold on the cable. You also could get a lead fishing weigh and do the same if you don't have the original ball. Should be an easy fix

Have you tried the Sewell Parts List? I am sure you can see the part you are looking for. Try it.

Default (Unsatisfactory) Resolution

It is not possible to purchase only the broken cable ANYWHERE, including salvage/junk dealers. I ended up purchasing the entire door lock actuator from Sewell for about $225, and will be Installing it myself. Have already removed the old actuator. Not an easy task. Btw none of the tutorials mention to make sure your door window is UP before you disconnect the battery and then remove the door panel--can't get the old actuator out with window down. I have zero faith in methods to "fix" the broken cable as there is too much pressure put on The cable when opening a door to withstand soldering, or other recommended "fixes".

bumping this thread as my door latch cable is broken....... the ball & the green cover broke off on mine. The lock actuator was working...just need a new cable. However, it doesn't seem like I can get the cable only like OP mention, I will likely need to order the whole door lock actuator.

Until then........will need to reach out from the inside to the door handle to open it

And just this morning when I arrived at work my inside door handle wouldn't open the door, while the outside does. why couldn't this have happened yesterday at the dealer while they where installing my new alternator???

I suspect that my cable has headed south, but I need to confirm by pulling the inside panel.

Is it only the swedged ball that releases, or does something else break as well (I'm looking at the green or gray plastic sleeves in those pictures).

So this is the cable that runs from the inside handle, to the door latch itself. And a second cable runs alongside related to the locking mechanisms?

Looks like we'll be shopping for the entire latch/cable unit. I'd like to hope that you could re-swedge the ball onto the cable, but I doubt it without special equipment. And once you have the latch mechanism out, might as well fix it correctly.

Good motorbike maintenance places can make nearly any cable you need. I've gotten many cables made up in my local place, stuff that was by virtue of cost impractical to buy. Most I ever spent was 20 euros there for two brand new cables. Changed my old cruise control cables on a 4WS JDM Prelude many moons ago as well.

I've ridden bikes for 50 years, and had a few cables made, so yes I might investigate that approach. Latch assemblies via non-dealer sources are a few hundred US---worse at the dealer.
