Default 2003 SC GPS issues

I am the original owner of a 2003 SC. My GPS has stopped working, the screen has a message stating that it can not read the DVD. I have tried the original DVD and the most recent update to no avail. Any suggestions on troubleshooting this issue.
Thanks

The Gen 2/3 system in the early SC430's ( 2002 - 2005 ) is notorious for having that issue. There
are many threads on this subject. You have tried the most obvious fix, switching to a known good
DVD map disk. There are a bunch of other things you can try, depending on your mechanical and
technical skill level. Power resets, cleaning kits, removal / disassembly and manual jumping 9V on
to the stepper motor, replacing the motor and on... Try a search on this subject for the detailed
info contained in the many posts.

For me, the bottom line was replacement / upgrade to a Gen 4 system with the latest Gen 4 map disk.
At $400 it was cheaper than the $1800 repair the Lexus dealer quoted.

Same happened to my 2002 sc430 last Dec 2012.

Ended up buying used Gen 4 from ebay and swapping out by myself.
So surprise how easy it was to do! Just plug and play.

There are multiple messages already posted by others w/ detail instructions and pics.

Does the Gen4 have the bluetooth option? Does it work properly in your 2002?

I don't have a user manual for Gen 4 so cannot tell if it even has BT capabilities.
I do know many owners use aftermarket add-on to gain BT and Ipod interface.

Basically I removed broke Gen 2/3 unit and plug in Gen 4 (with Gen 4 disk) and everything works as in past. It still has "I Agree" prompt unlike my 2008 GX470. Overall Gen 4 graphics are slightly better with more color.

Thanks for the reply. I was under the impression that the Gen4 has built in bluetooth capability in the DVD player module. If anyone on this forum can confirm? Also JJsc430, it would be an option on the menu in the navigation program... possibly something like "Phone," or "Dial," in the Menu Screen? Then you'd just have to link your cell phone.

Gen 4 does have blue tooth However i dont think the wire harness in your car has the correct config to operate the phone. In order to use the option you have to press the information button on the controls beneath the navigation that I think are attached to it. You would have to replace the entire module display above the radio that has buttons then you need to address the wire harness issues.

Ohh ok, I thought it was just a software/hardware upgrade. I thought since the player has the bluetooth device built into it, the bluetooth would just work for any car that upgraded to the Gen4 player as long you are using a compatible Gen4 software disc (that has the bluetooth "program.") Thanks for the clarification, MrBlister.

You also need the mic harness that is mounted overhead and have to figure out how to get the phone to integrate into the speakers

True... good point. It would have been so nice if it was that easy for Plug and Play Bluetooth. Shucks.
