Question Sewell Key question--short length?

Question for any anyone who has bought replacement keys from Sewell.

I received both the master and a valet key today--precut by Sewell for my car.

As I compared the length of both new keys..I can see they are somewhat shorter in length than my original master key.

Has anyone seen this? Is there any issue? I have not tried to program the keys yet..as I wonder about the length.

Thanks for your replies. I have seen some people getting longer keys, but have not read about getting shorter keys.

Someone posted about this recently...from Texas too. Can't remember his name-check out the searches. You should be fine. I remember when I bought mine for my 02 it was the same thing. I had a "family" of key sizes! LOL

Programming is pretty easy. PM me if you need instructions, I think I have them saved somewhere-or they definitely have been posted on here, cuz that's where I got them.

+1 on that. The length of the shaft is not necessarily important. Just try the keys in your various locks and if they work, they are good. (It is the cut that is important, not the length, in this case.) If they don't work, then there is a problem, but more than likely, they will work just fine.

Harold, like you, I've heard that the length of the shaft is not necessarily important, but I don't know that everyone would agree with that. Sure, a short shaft might work, but that doesn't necessarily mean that everyone's going to be happy. I've heard that some just prefer the extra length. However, I think it's safe to say that whether it's long or short, if it doesn't work, nobody's gonna be satisfied and there will be problems and complaints.

Sorry...

+1, Texas83 posted the same type thread in Oct, apparently length is not an issue.

Default Thanks..

We shall see if there are any issues.. I would assume Sewell will stand behind their sale.

Well, like I mentioned earlier, the proof is in the pudding. Ram it in there and turn it. You'll know real quick whether the shorter length is a problem. (I can tell you from experience that longer is not a problem.) It all depends on your situation. So give it a try.

Well and the end of the story is..

I have them both programed to start the car, but I have to get the remote keys programed to open remotely.

Just a little bit more..then I will be home free..Yipee!

Uhhhh I was following the posts and just LOL when I heard Harold say "just ram it in and see if it works"...

Just remember, it's not the size of the shaft, it's how you work it!

You guys are too much

Well Derek, sometimes you just have to go with what comes natural and with some of us that boils down to brute force and ignorance...

Nice work, guys. Now get out of the tub.
Back to our regular programming.

As long as the key is long enough to align all the tumblers (or whatever is in the lock) and it turns, it's fine. The only other issue would be if the key housing hits the lock housing (could wear down both over time).

Other than that, the only issue with key length is that the transponder in the key has to be close enough to the ignition switch so the car will start (starter turns, but won't fire).
