Default A Bittersweet Day.

On my way into work two weeks ago, I got rear-ended by a SUV while I was completely stopped in morning traffic on the highway. The driver of the SUV didn’t even touch his breaks when he hit me at speeds of 40 to 50 mph. I was pushed about 15 feet into another car that was also stopped – that car fled the scene of the accident – don’t ask me why but he did.

Although the pictures may not show a lot of damage, the car was declared a total loss by my insurance company. The car did its job in protecting me and I can say with full confidence that if I was in a lesser car, I would have been extremely hurt or worse; thank you Lexus for building a solid car. Both the insurance adjuster and the body shop were surprised when they took my SC apart for damage assessment. The body shop specializes in Lexus and they have never seen such extensive damage.

I have circled in Red some interesting items in the photos. http://home.comcast.net/~markch/accident/

For example, see how the exhaust pipes got flattened. This happened when the entire car flexed up to absorb the impact. Notice the suspension arm with a split. The trunk latch stayed closed even though the trunk lid was bent up so far. There are a few photos with strange paint chips on the doors - this happened when the car flexed upwards and the doors impacted against the body…very weird.

My 2005 had only 22k miles on it and was in pristine condition. The good news is that I’m still here even though I got beat up pretty bad. I’ll be getting a new 2007 in a few weeks when I feel better and no longer need pain killers to get by.

Great to hear that you are OK.
The best pain killer for you will be a brand new 2007 SC.
FYI, the flat spot on the both pipes before muffler in ur pics is mostly normal. It is designed that way by factory.

They got flattened even more than normal - to the point where the exhaust was being restricted.

It's definitely good to hear that you are doing ok, that looks like it was a pretty bad accident. You will definitely enjoy the 07 though, you get the new tails, new headlights and bumper, adaptive lighting, etc. All of us with the pre-06 SCs crave these mods.

Well at least you can sell them as Toms exhaust now!
Seriously, good to have you onboard to post this. The car did it's job and did it well.

Oh, Dang.....That's very sad to hear about your baby.

The new '07 should be a nice one to replace.

sorry to hear about your SC. you said you ended up hitting the car in front of you - how did the front hold up?

so the car in front that you hit left or the SUV left?

I got hit by the SUV and was pushed into a Honda Accord. The Accord left the accident, but I gave his license plate to the CHP. The SUV was not able move.

The font end was also a mess. The hood was bent and there was also some frame damage but not that extensive as the rear.

dude, glad to hear that you're OK. My old SC400 undoubtedly saved my life when I got hit head on by a drunk driver going 80 in the wrong direction. These cars are as solid as it gets. Enjoy the '07!
