03 Nav Problems
The procedure is a little bit different, and I'm not sure if the '03 SC has a Gen 2 or a Gen 3 system, so you might have to -- and I hate to say this -- check the manual.
For some reason, the manual for the NAV is almost as big as the other manual which covers the whole rest of the car, but if you look for it you will find it.
Also, each time you enter a destination, you can get to the option list and change these settings for that particular destination, but you don't need to bother with that if you set the defaults.
I had a similar problem early on with strange routing, and eventually discovered that the default was set to select routes that avoided toll roads, which caused a very roundabout route which made no sense to me. Once I changed the setting, I got the right route, which was direct and much, much shorter, although the five miles of toll road costs me almost a dollar.

Nav works relatively well, but many of the POIs are not there. I also found that going down to Atlantic City, the NAV was completely confused as to where I was. When I got it, they told me they had the latest NAV software installed, but how can I be sure?
Thanks,
Eric
Pressing this will give you the data version of the disc in the drive.
The 2003 cars came with either ver 1.01 or 2.01, I think.
The current version is 5.01, but updating is not something many owners do, so it is rare to find one with the current version. My guess is that you have version 2. If you have ver 5, I would be surprised. If you have 3 or 4, then the previous owner bought a new disc somewhere along the line, and maybe did not know about ver 5, (which became available in mid January of 2006). If so, he may have thought his representation was accurate.
I don't know why you say many of the POIs are not there. The system does not have absolutely every restaurant and gas station, but there are a lot of them there. When I updated from ver 2 to ver 5 in January of this year, I did see that newer roads were shown, and newer restaurants were there also.
Last year I drove my SC from Cape May (which is south of Atlantic City) to Philadelphia, and there is not much in the way of POI in central, rural New Jersey. This might give you the impression that the POIs are lacking. But if the maps are showing up accurately, then the system will access the POI file with no problems.
If you bought this from a dealer and you have some record that you were promised the "latest version" of the software, and you find that you do not have ver 5.01, then that dealer owes you the new disc (which goes for about $250.00). If you bought this from the previous owner, you are pretty much out of luck, as there will be no way to prove that this was a part of the deal, plus you would have to prove that the seller knew that the car did not have the latest version, and you won't be able to do that, and that problem is not worth 250. The individual is certainly not going to upgrade this for you, since you had a chance to verify what the data version was, and you did not bother to do this (until now, long after the sale).
If the NAV got "lost," then either you were on new roads (unlikely) or your system lost the GPS signal, which happens, but mostly in cities. If the green GPS indicator is there under the North Arrow, then the system has enough GPS signals to operate. If not, and if you are out in the open, then maybe there is an antenna problem, which can happen, although I have not had that happen to me.
Maybe we could provide more help if you give details as to what you mean by "confused" and why you think POIs are "not there."
The car has 2.01 on it.
I bought the car pre-owned from a Lexus Dealer and he told me that the system was supposed to have the latest version so I'm sure he'll make things right.
Thanks again..
Eric
