Default Custom Labels on CD's

Just wanted to mention something that happened to me last week. I inserted a CD into the ML with a label on it (a friend gave me a CD made for me, and he affixed a CD label to it). Jammed up inside the player. It was stuck in slot 3. The other CD's played fine but when it got to slot 3, error message. I was able to verrrry gently pry it out with tweezers and all works fine now.

I'm sure it's common sense to some of you, but I didn't know that it's not a good idea to play a CD with a label. Won't be doing THAT in the future!

That's one of the first things you learn the first time you get a car with an in-dash player. The heat makes the adhesive weak, and the label peels back upon ejection. Even the makers of the stick on labels warn users not to use them in such systems.

There are at least 3 solutions:

Play only store-bought CDs.

Magic Marker.

Light-Scribe

actually the disc are very packed inside. it's the thickness that jammed the cd, just like the is300 and such. definitely NO label. i always just write on the cd

That's correct for me, there was no peeling of the label, it was definitely the thickness in this case. Those six CD's are TIGHT!

Thanks for the tip. I have never heard of printable CDs, but I will check them out. I suppose you need a compatible type of printer then.

There are CDs that have a top that can be printed upon; but you need a printer that can run the CD through it. I think Epson and HP make such printers.

HP has a technology called LightScribe which is a coating on the top of the CD. If you have a LS drive, you can flip the CD over and your cover art can be printed on the top of the CD by the laser that burns the CD. I have one of these. The upside is that there is no expensive ink color ink cartridges. The downside is that you have to have a LS drive, the image is monochrome only and the image burning process can take up to 20 minutes, depending upon the density of the image. "Draft mode" is faster but the image is more grey than black. On the other hand, it's very convenient.

Faster and cheaper than either of these is the magic marker, which works on all CDs.

If you're going to burn your own CDs, consider purchasing Taiyo Yuden blanks; a very highly regarded brand. They make printable CDs as well as plain old regular CDs. Search on newegg.com to see what they have.

If you decide to write on them instead of using a specialized printer, use a Sharpie marker.
