Default Debaging the SC?

I am not planing to fully debadge it, instead want to remove the gold layer that is over the chrome layer (heard from someone when searching about debadging). I plan to debadge the SC400, Lexus, and "L" logo. Use the technique that everyone says to do when debadging a car.

Two questions though,

When removing it, i hear there are going to be holes behind some of these badges, is this true and will it affect my final product?

Once i debadge it and fix it up to my liking, what do i use to REbadge them?

Update: i finished the back!
(minibubbles, uneven paint, uglyness)
kinda big pictures FYI.

I couldn't find anything for the rebadging.. thats why i asked.

But the first question, about the holes, I wanted to know if I put back the badges, will the holes show or something?

I dont exactly understand your goal. You want to remove the gold finish on the emblems? There are a few people who were able to get that gold finish sanded down to a nice silver finish. Yes there are 3 holes behind the "L" emblem and 2 behind the "Lexus" emblem. All the holes are located on the trunk. The holes are for the little nubblies on the back of the emblem.

Thanks for that info. Yeah, i was planning on getting rid of the gold and making into the silver finish. Guess not anymore..but i guess i can paint it another color.

The "nubblies" - Will they get destroyed when I remove the badges after I heat them up and use d.floss to remove the badges?

Sometimes the pins will break off but I just removed a set from a spare trunk I had and was able to remove it without breaking anything.

When you reattach you can just stick the pins back in but I would also use some extra adhesive such as double sided tape. They make one that seems more like an epoxy then a thick foam tape but I forgot what its called

The guidepins are supposed to guide the emblems into place, so they will be evenly spaced and will not be crooked. They aren't supposed to tarnish the final product. When I removed my emblems few months ago to paint them, they were removed without harm (nothing bent or broke) by using a hair dryer and Goo Gone. It just takes patience, particularly the clean up! Good luck!

Great answers. Thanks felix!

But, for painting them, what do i use? I have no idea how to do this, and I got a grasp for debadging and rebadging, but now how to treat it and paint it or whatever.

Can anyone direct me to a tutorial or something?

I read in some places that i have to sand it down and primer it..? I have NO idea what to use for these and such.. any help?

You need the following: flat head screwdriver, dental floss, Goo Gone, sand paper, primer paint, 3M mounting tape that is red on the outside and grey on the inside (says outdoor tape on the packet), regular paint tape, and patience.

The procedure: Use the blue painter's tape to go arounf the sides of each emblem so you get an idea of where the go back on the car.Get behind the emblems with the floss and start going back and forth. You will see the old tape start to come off from the back. You will be able to completely take off the SC and 300 emblems this way with no problem. When you get to the "L and Lexus" logo try and use the floss as much as you can. Get that flat head screw driver and "gently" press it against the blue tape you put on the car to get them out. These emblems have several pegs in the back of them which is great for putting back on the car. Be careful with the L on the front of the car cause it was absolutely a nightmare to get out.

Once you have the emblems off the car...clean up the back of the emblems and the car with the Goo Gone. It's important to clean off all the old tape so the new tape can stick real good.

On to paint.....take your sand paper and just scuff up the emblems a little bit for the paint to stick. Then put the primer paint on the emblems so your black paint can really stick to the emblem and come out smooth and even. After you did the primer...wait to dry....black paint...let dry....then put the clear paint next. You can put as many coats of black as you want and be sure not to go crazy with the clear...just one time and several strokes. You don't want those emblems to get too "blingie."

After everything has dried out take strips of your 3M tape and put it on the back of your emblems. Since you have the blue painter's tape on the car you will have an idea where to put back your emblems.

Overall it should take someone a full day to get it done right but it is well worth it

If you want to see them on my car just check out page 3 of my thread below my signature.

That's the color that I wanted. So i will just follow your directions. I buy my parts from a place called Kragen (auto part store). Any specific brand\item i should get? I don't want these to turn out crappy.

Any primer will due and use high heat engine paint. Use the gloss black and the same high heat engine paint for clear.

It's a Garnet Red sc. I havnt seen any garnet red sc's with black emblems. I was thinking MAYBE white, but it wouldnt match anything.

Would the black be the way to go i guess?
