Just wondering if/how anyone blacked out the outside chrome window trim? I've seen some pictures and have tried to find a good exterior black tape but haven't had any luck. Any easier method than painting it? Pic is not my car but what I'm looking for.
Those are usually done with plasti-dip, you can more or less spray it on thick and then peel it along the edges once its mostly cured.
Otherwise with paint you would have to remove the trim or if on the car still you have to tape everything off perfectly.
Search plasti dip chrome trim on google.
I had mine wrapped with gloss black vinyl about six years ago. I tried to use a blackout tape prior to wrapping it but it came out pretty bad. The same shop also wrapped my LS and BMW. So far those cars are holding up really well.
I’m looking to get it redone since it’s starting to peel off. I was actually considering painting it but I wasn’t sure if people actually did that.
If painting, you probably need to scuff up the chrome first -- carefully, so you don't also scuff the paint nearby -- for better adhesion. I don't know whether that's important for plasti-dip. Vinyl wraps are likely to work much better, as the smooth surface would be good for the cling fit.
Kira, you may want to get the wrap redone sooner rather than later. I think 7 years is the shelf life on a lot of those products. It supposedly becomes really difficult to remove after that.
Don't scuff it up for plastidip, just clean it really well and spray on several coats, the lines come out really clean if you follow the guides online.
The advantage to plastidip is you can do it on the car, it can be touched up, and peeled off like the wrap, just way easier to apply.
My brother just did his whole LX570, there is a surprising amount of chrome on the newer models.

Thank you for the heads up on that. I was surprised it lasted this long to be honest. The car sat outside for the past year and that’s what caused it to start peeling off. I’ll definitely get that redone.

The LX570’s have a crazy amount of chrome. There was a special edition blacked out LX570 that came with black headlights, black trim, and some black chrome accents. It looked so cool.
That would look awesome for sure especially if it comes that way. Alot of the newer models have gotten carried away with the chrome.
It was pretty awesome! It had a special interior with white leather. A few of the newer Lexus’ have special editions like that.
They really do get carried away with the chrome sometimes. The LX570 is a big offender. I like how some Lexus’ like the RC-F can come with black/smoked chrome instead of regular chrome. It’s the best of both worlds!
