Unhappy Purchase: 1998-2000 SC 400 vs. 2003 Eclipse

Please Help!! My friend was in the market for a car. He wanted a brand new Eclipse, but he is willing to change his decision. He is looking for a two door around $25,000. I brought the SC to his attention and showed him the picture. He loved the design/look. He doesn't know much about cars, but loves to drive. He didn't even know that the Eclipse was front wheel drive. He does want rear wheel drive. Now I kow that the SC 400 is a better car even though used, but can you guys help me with supporting the SC 400 over the Eclipse.

There really is no comparison between the two. The SC is three times the car that the new eclipse is. I had a friend with one and, compared to the SC, it's a toy. IMO The design was old after a year and, in minneapolis anyway, everyone has one.

98-00 SC400 has 290HP and Eclipse 210HP. The retail price of a new SC400 is over $50,000 thus built quality and materials used are much better than the Eclipse.

Hahaha, wow. The Eclipse really is a joke man, no stock turbos, all they got is a V6 which under powered for a car thats supposed to be pretty sporty. Even for the top of the line with a stick its gonna be close to 25K, and the Sportronic tranny is over 25K. Not a good deal in my eyes at all. tell him to get a VVT-i SC400 and he'll be more than happy when he rapes his first eclipse from a light or from a roll.

yeah the big wigs at mitsubishi are really going backwards with the redesigned eclipse. both in body and especially the engine. The turbo four cylinder would have left the newer v6 in the rear view.

Does he want to spend all his extra money fixing a busted *** car, or buying enhancement mods?

Default hmm...

Hmm.. That is a hard one... Mitsubishi.... Lexus.... Mitsubishi.... Lexus... Well I would pick the Brand New Mitsubishi over the Lexus any day............... LOL NOT........ I would take a 11 year old Lexus over a Brand New Mitsubishi any day, and if you are talking about a 98 - 2k then that is even better

Toyota is 10x the car of a Mitsubishi or a Honda, hell both combined....

Default wow

man, that chart just put a great big smile on my face... I'm so proud to own a lexus, the finest vehicle on the road today. The biggest drawback of owning an SC400 is every poor, pretentious person I meet gives me the old "oh, its just a camry" or "its just a souped up toyota" which it really is way beyond. Considering they have only one car in their whole line (ES) which isn't unique.

Apparently Cadillac has come leaps and bounds!! I remember in the mid 90's when they were considered the most unreliable car ever made, and now they stand at #2, right behind us (although there is a big margin). Lets give them a hand for that!

I think alot of that list has to do with the models that the individual brand is selling, i.e. Cadillac probably crept up to number two because the bulk of its sales have been Escalades for the last 4 years. I would imagine the Tahoe is pretty reliable! I think M/B took it hit based on that damn ML, that thing is a crap box! If anyone does not believe me, go over to M/Bworld and peek on the ML forums! Guys have had their brand new cars in the shop 14 times! I dont think you heard me I SAID FOURTEEN TIMES!

That being said, I am happy to be driving a Lexus, and as it was mentioned earlier, the LexusSC is/was the flagship model of the line (50k and up) so the R&D, materials, techonology are all leaps and bounds ahead of the Mitsu. Plus think about this, he could get a 2k certified SC, have a warranty, clean body/paint, etc, and probably still never have HALF the problems he would have with that Eclipse!

Hell, I'll take a 98 SC4 right about now!

The point is made The SC 400 is better than the mitsubishi eclipse. But is there anything that compares to the SC 400 around $25,000. Speed, reliablity, and luxury are probably the most important when he buys his ride. For example: Supra, 300ZX, etc.
