How do you lose a turbo?? Did you forget to close the hood? Leave the garage door open one night? Let it off it's leash??

But seriously, what happened? Any lessons for the rest of us to learn from??

gadget, i noticed the tubes running to the intercooler from the turbo are very long since you had to go around the radiator and such. does this extra length impair performance at all or cause a drag? or has anyone even studied what the changes would be if it were a shorter distance?

Heres what happened.....Life was good, had my A/F's under control with the fjo (still waiting on the datalogging kit from MVP ). Car was running good. I started getting a strange vibration at around 3 - 4krpm. I initially thought the vibration could be caused by my IC pipes possibly touching somthing in the engine bay. Didnt really cause any problems. I then started having boost problems.....One day I cant boost past 12psi then the next i'd have spikes past 16psi. I start looking into my boost controller and connections, didnt really find anything.
Then one day I pull her out for a drive and while warming-up I notice smoke from the exhaust
What Now. I take her out for a quit drive around my neighborhood and every time I stop and then start driveing I see a very large cloud of smoke in my rear. I also notice that I cant hear the compressor whine.
Once I get home (5min ride) I pop the hood and the exhaust side of the turbo is cooking
I let her cool, put it in the garage and make some panic calls. I endure a long sleepless night and speak to Larry at SP who says send it in its covered under warranty. So now the wait.
The turbo had less than 500miles.
Looks like I had all the symptoms of a dying turbo with some of the problems I had, I just never considered that it could be the turbo
So theres my story.

Onelast......I dont think that I had any problems with the IC pipes. I believe that this is the standard routing for the NA-t / Frontmount setup. Correct me If I am wrong.

Less than 500 miles!! BUMMER!!!!!

Any idea what caused it? Oil line problems or just infant mortality?

What are your oil lines like? Drain line larger than intake line? Any kinks or sharp bends?

Really sorry to hear about this. I can imagine what it's like waiting for a replacement

wmulli......The oil lines or loss of oil supply was the first thing I thought to look at....
After letting every cool, I disconnect the oil supply line and put it into a bottle while I start the car. I had plenty of oil squirting out. No kinks or sharp bends and the return line is a 10an.
I didnt find anything obvious after removing the turbo. No sign of broken vanes ....just lots of shaft play.
My guess is infant mortality.
The wait Sucks.........I was sooo tempted to go for that SP63 that was for sale a couple of weeks back. Funny what boost will do to you

Right, but the standard is sometimes improved upon. i was only asking from knowing what a difference in the exaust on a normal car is when you either shorten, or widen the pipes.

Default A Peek Inside The A340E

Since the wait for my turbo is longer than expected, I decided to dive into my tranny. I am hoping to extend the life of this thing until I can work a built tranny into the budget.
First off I had my tranny serviced awhile back at a Lexus service dept, I mention this because you will see the use of red silicone on the pan Notice they even got it on the filter and some of the connectors

I ordered a Flexalite remot oil cooler (the one with the fan). I hope to get that in over the weekend, and once I get it running I plan a complete tranny fluid flush. Hope to make through a couple of months

Last pic is the pan with the toyota FIPG, the pan just popped of with the other stuff

Ed, that looks clean, you can eat of that. Looks better than what the Lexus techs put on there.
