Default Blown Engine '94 SC300

So there is a loud knocking coming from the the top of the engine near the pistons. Had it towed to the dealership and they told me it would be 5k for a new engine replacement. So of course I said tow it back to my house.

I havent gotten the chance to look at the engine myself but if a new engine is required, I was thinking of buying the 2jz-gte and replacing the current engine with that.

My question is... Is the new engine and tranny all I would need or are there other parts I need to order before my SC would be drivable again?

Just search for 2JZGTE swap. There are zillions of threads. Your parts list would depend on your choice to keep the stock twins or go right for a nice single turbo setup. It will also depend upon your choice of tranny.

Unless you are a mechanic or extremely knowledgable about boosted cars, you have loads of reading to do before making well informed choices. Take your time if you can.

Good luck.

With a 94 it might be better/cheaper to look into a 1jz swap.

I have read through a couple threads, but will be doing more extensive research this weekend when I have the time. Im neither a mechanic or extremely knowledgeable, just gotten into the whole car thing a few years ago. Brought this car as my first project so im learning as I go.

1JZ swap sounds reasonable after looking and comparing prices but Ive found a few 2jzgte for less than 1.5k but I dont know if they would be reliable.

So now after you mentioned it, I'm leaning more towards the 1JZ. But im confused on the differences between Chaser and Soarer. Is there any real major difference?

Again, I will be doing more extensive research when I have the time. Thanks for the responses.

Chaser is front sump, SC is rear. You have to spend to change that.

You would need all of the parts that are part of any 1J/2J turbocharged car. Motor/tranny, intercooler, piping, BOV, wastegate, mounts, downpipes/exhaust, fuel pump, management/ECU, refresh motor with, timing belt/water pump, seals, off the top of my head. And that's if you keep the stock twins. Others will chime in, I'm just starting to get it. My 300 is in Ma. getting a turbo kit put on.

I really think getting a 2jz is worth it over a 1jz because you can order any parts you need at Toyota dealer but not a 1jz.
simple stop at the parts department.

Thanks everyone for their input. I have time to decide between a 1JZ or 2JZ as I just purchased a LS400 for my daily driver (another headache already) until I get my SC fixed. I will be buying the recommended book all knowledge is helpful if not now later on. Thanx

I never buy parts from a dealer but if you plan on daily driving maybe thats something to consider.

A nice 1jz out of a soarer makes for a "simple" swap with wiring ect.
