I've heard that engine swap in California is legal under a few circumstances:
1) The engine is newer than the car
2) The engine and the car are from the same company (2JZGTE on GS, F20C on Integra, etc.)
3) Smog legal / CARB ok, etc.
I think the should be legal as long as they pass emisions, I dought the emision tester would even know that its a supra engine they would think you just did a twin turbo upgrade since boot engines use the I-6 from toyota
Hahaha... Are you talking about the S15? Or the S14? I say go with the plethora of mods on the S14 SR20DET and avoid the valve timing engine for less headaches. I can help you with the stand alone on it.
the S14 has variable valve timing (i think on the intake side), the S13 doesn't. the S13 is easier to work with and cheaper to get.
hey V300
did you import a V300? did you convert it yourself? if so how much did it cost you? I'm very interested in builind a Gs300 with a 2jzgte, or a turbo GS3 98+.
Oh yeah... the SR20DET is not a listed engine on the shores of the US. It's going to be rated as race-only (not a street) engine unless you run it by CARB and referee it.

well that was my inital plan, S15 SR20 but now it's gonna be way too expensive. S14 SR20DET, pretty nice. S13 redtop, too old. Mileage will be like 50k~60k.
Plus now I'm kinda thinking about just turboing the KA24. But for a reason I MUST use the S13 240sx hatchback (180sx) body so need to get a newer KA24 that people swapped out.
Yes, I have done a conversion. Not to be rude, but I do not like disclose how much money I have spent. I can tell you if your interested be ready to spend at least $10,000 for a decent conversion yielding 413hp and 387lb torque at the wheel.
Globe,
Unless you are going to build the bottom end of the KA24, it's not a robust engine. The internals of a KA24 are what you would call "economy quality control parts." XS forgot to mention that turbocharging the KA24 dramatically reduces the life of the engine. ... the KA24 does have excellent torque though.

yah I've heard that many internal parts have to be swapped out (pistons etc.) for anything over 250 crank hp on the KA24. And I'm not going to stop at 250hp if I have a turbo KA24! So that makes me even more freaked out about a 120,000+ mile KA24 from 1991. That's where the "swapping in new KA24" idea came from. But even if it's new, then like you said there are still parts that need to be swapped. So much trouble. It's weird how KA24's internals are so weak but has an iron block, and people with SR20DETs can use lotsa boost with this aluminum block.
You're right aboutthe economy quality control parts it's cheaper to make a KA24 than the original CA18DET on the 180sx.
GLOBECLK : Can I see some pictures of your car when you're done with the s15 conversion...
I was thinking of doing a Sil-1580 as a side project...where are you getting the front clip/engine/etc. from?
well if it gets through i'll show pics. I know of 1 person in japan who did exactly what i want with the exterior, and last week i saw it on a magazine! super street? sucks! ruined it!
v300-
whats up! I havent seen you around in a while. How is your car doing? Did everything get finished up? im dying to see that thing in action. You still have to take me for a ride
