Hello all!

I just purchased a 2 1/2 ton hydro jack and 2 stands. I want to change from my winter tires over to my summers soon.

The next time you guys are under your car, could I trouble you for a picture on where you position your jack when you raise the whole front end and rear end of your sc?

When I look at my frame, there are only 4 designated jacking points on the frame that I see. And the length of those are only as large as one jack and not both the jack and the stand.

I use a hydraulic lift when I work on my Lex, and I only use the 4 jacking points. While under the car, I have never noticed a reinforced portion of the chassis centered on the front or rear that is intented for jacking. I would call a trusted mechanic who is used to working on unibody cars. Just throwing a jack under the car where you think you can put it can damage your car and hurt you if you are under it when something gives way. Just get a pair of bottle jacks, or take it to someone that has a lift. Whatever you do, be safe!

 

I was told you can use the differential as a rear jacking point and the crossmember for the front jacking point.

Can someone confirm?

The reason I ask is I don't want to only use the hydro jack. They are not inteded to keep the car up for long periods of time.

So no one here jacks up their whole front end at one time and puts her on stands?

How long/low is your jack that you can get it all the way to the crossmember listed in the book? I tried, but my jack won't fit that far under the car. (Sorry for all the sexual innuendo. Didn't know quite how to ask the question, then figured I'd just ask anyway...)

 

I just had the car up today putting new rims on. I used a hydraulic jack to lift the car then put the jack stands on the designated lift points. A little tip a mechanic gave me was to put a block of wood on the saddle of the jack. Most times the saddle doesn't fit exactly over the lift points, thus causing slipping or damage to your car. My fuel filter is just before the driver's side rear wheel so be careful where you place the jack.

 

I've had my car in the air so many times I've quit counting. Mine is slightly lowered with Eibach springs, making a regular floor jack a tight fit to get back to that front cross member (yes, that's a great spot to lift both sides (front) at once. What I do is drive the car up on a 2x4 or 4x4 to get the front end high enough for clearance of the jack. Jack up from the front cross member, then place your jack stands right underneath the pivot point for the the lower suspension arm. I usually leave the jack in place just as a double safety, I don't trust those jack stands much more than the jack.

Same process in the back... the lower suspension pivot points are a good place to set jack stands.

don't try to jack up the car with a floor jack from the sides... you're sure to put a divot in the sheet metal underneath.

 

They have designated jacking points on the sides. Two per side, one per weel. These come in handy for flats. Or changing tires the old fashioned way.
