As the commercial goes:

"It takes you almost an hour to get to work. Which leaves you with two choices, you can either own a house close to work, or you can own the road in between."

I drive 100 miles per day, 6 days a week. I've done this drive with my 93 LS400 and my 93 GS300. Each has it's advantages. I've had a couple of SC300s as well in the past, but I've always been curious about the SC400.

As luck would have it, I was able to purchase this SC400 for a good price indirectly from the original owner. She had given it away because it failed smog. It had changed hands a few times and I received it from a fellow who was not interested in a coupe.

While it has it's typical SC (early 90s) issues. I can see how the SC400 was well desired in it's day. it is a great touring car. It wants to be on the open road at 90-100MPH and just keep going. Stock for stock it's at the top of the lineup (with us not having the soarer TT)

I have had 2 LS400s on the same commute. They were comfy, yet uninspired. I felt like I was driving a boat. The SC400 wants to move around. The handling is great. Acceleration takes little to no effort. I'm probably 10% throttle or less during the whole freeway trip.

I have a few plans, including needed maintenance...

The good points:

- All the power controls work (shock), both seats and steering tilt!
- Seats were recovered
- Memory seats work
- Sunroof good


What needs work:

- Cluster needles as usual
- Climate control display out as usual
- Heater does not work
- Rotors warped badly
- Oil Leaks
- Steering wheel and armrest worn out

I am about to sell my 94k mile SC400 to purchase an LS400.

Is there anything particularly bad about the LS400 outside of your driving preferences?

I,ve never had a repair & have never seen a drop of any kind of fluid underneath, but then I've owned it for most of its life
You need to check out your oil leak.________GL

 

Replaced valve cover gaskets today. I was hoping that was the oil leak, but it was only half of the story. It fixed the top leak but it looks like the front main seal is leaking. I'll have to park it for a little while until I can deal with that. It's too bad because the timing belt had already been replaced.

The radiator cap also had some cracked rubber, so replaced that as well. Total cost for valve cover gaskets, grommets and radiator cap about $50 and a couple hours of time to replace.
