So i've looked around the forums and i found some rebuild DIYs for if ___ or __ needs replacing.
Sorry its a simple question but i have really little to no knowledge on cars , and alternators espcially.
How do i know what part of my alternator needs replacing ?
My 1992 sc300 at 190k's alternator just died.
Im pretty sure because of the eletrical burning smell i've had There's definitetly been some sort of fluid leaking on it.
Also my car wont start - theres like a weird... buzzing sound when i try to start it up and all the lights that are still working flicker when i turn the key .

 

You can buy any lexus alternator from sc300,sc400, ls400....etc....as long as the plug style is the round one...I am running a aftermarket 145 amp ls400 on mine with no problems...You should be able to pick up a re manufactured one online for less than $150

Here is the Toyota part #: 27060-50040.....you can find the equivalent nippondenso alternator with that part #

 

The alternator charges the battery, so car probably won't start because the battery voltage is too low to turn over the starter.

SC300, most likely your distributor is whats leaking on to the alternator. At that mileage it's most likely the distributor has an internal leak and needs to be replaced. Sometimes you can get lucky and it's just the o-ring that has to be replaced. You can do a search for "distributor o-ring" on here and find a few threads about that. And honestly for the time involved in rebuilding an alternator you're better off just removing the alternator and taking it to a shop to have them re-wind it, or just buy a new oem alternator off e-bay.

if i was to call my local junkyard, could i ask for a toyota alternator with the part number

Youd prob. tell them the year , make and model of your car. If there like most of the salvage yards in my area thy will say we dont have any Lexus SC cars. I dont recommend trying to rebuild your alt. Try rockauto.com

 

if you find your alternator is bad , i have a real nice polished one forsale in the sc classifieds section .. it has the oval plug and fully polished for that bling look

 

I've been trying all kinds of search terms and this is as close as I've gotten to my question.

I purchased a used SC alternator and had it rebuilt to upgrade the amperage. We didn't figure out it was for an SC 300 until looking for the correct belt. They are different diameters from what I've read, but that should hopefully be a non-issue.

Has anyone installed an alternator from a SC 300 in a SC 400? If so were there any obstacles?

Not sure on the dimensions but to the naked eye they all appear identical, as stated before there's just a different plug depending on the years. Even then, I have cut and soldered the plug to work on my last SC and it was flawless. I actually have 1 of each in my garage right now. I'll snap a picture for ya when I get home tonight.

I read that the 95+ plugs are oval, so I think I'm OK there. But the sc300 is a diameter of 118mm...and the sc400 is diameter of 130mm...so don't know if it'll bolt up or not...

I have a alt. pic book at work and can tell you if theres any diff. other than amperage. Im confused you have a sc300 and want to put on a 400? Need to know your car model and year, and the model and year of the alt. you have.
