Question

I am in the need of a torque converter for a 93' sc400. I am planning on getting mine rebuilt, but would like to avoid any down time and was wondering if anyone had a torque converter sitting around that you would sell cheap.

Thanks

Question

How much will it cost you to have it recalibrated? One of the benefits of using a PI Dragon from SRT is the smaller diameter/lighter weight. This results in less rotational mass, like running a light weight flywheel. This allows the engine to react quicker and feel stronger. The smaller diameter is also more condusive to the higher stall speed. TCs actually redirect the oil from the drive side to the driven side and the vane angles are important in the efficiency. Still, it is $900 compared to ??? your cost.

Default Torque Converter

JBrady,

I agree the Dragon TC made in TN would be better, but
$300 vs 900(possibly 799 with group buy) It is just worth a try. Many people rework torque converters, It must work good. Toyota makes good parts and therefore the rebuilders will have a good base to work from.

They also give a 1 year warranty in writing. (Confidence in their work)

Worth a try, We will post our results.

C-ya,

Scott

Default thanks

SC400onDubz, Thanks for the tips. Beechbend can be rented out and it actually doesn't cost that much. I know some people that have done it before so I will try talk with them and see how much it would be. I think it would be really cool to get a meet together here. I think it would be the perfect town.

I have found a place that can re-work my converter for $300 plus shipping. I think as long as it works it would be worth it. I am not much on paying $900 for a new one when I can get mine rebuilt.

Mindflux, if you do find it I will be happy to pay the shipping.

Thanks everyone,

Thumbs up

Cool, definitely give us the track results. I would be very good info to compare 2 like cars one with a PI and one with a recal TC. 0-60, shift and drive feel, throttle response and engine response. Keep us posted.

I have a stock one if you need it.

Lighter converters are not necessarily better. Many times you need rotating inertia for better performance, especially during launch.

In some cases, you could also cause damage to your crankshaft/engine without enough rotating inertia when using sticky tires.

DW, in theory you are correct. I doubt it would be a problem on our cars. The lighter TC is still not LIGHT, just lighter. Plus launch is BETTER with the added torque multiplication and high Rev launch. Transient response should improve as well. My guess is I am singing to the choir because if you have an extra stocker laying around you probably have a HP TC already, yes?

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm......................

I had to put a NHRA certified 10pt roll cage if that's any hint

Someone named Pat Musi (I'm sure most of you people have never heard of him ) had to help with some of my suspension/chassis problems I was having - good thing the people at Holley/NOS are in good with him...help from only them apparently wasn't enough

Oh yeah this car will have a really nice stereo too

Confused yet?!?!?!??!
