tight oil filter

Default tight oil filter

anyone have any tips or tricks for removing an oil filter thats on really tight?

i have one of the black plastic caps that goes over the end but i dont have enough room to hammer that on tight enough, so it keeps sliping

I hate that plastic cap, it never worked for me.
Go to the part store with your new oil filter and ask them to give you a metal one that fits your oil filter and just hook it up to your 3/8th and you're good to go. Metal one's never slip specially if its the correct size on your oil filter.

I like the strap wrench for those stubborn ones the shops always over tighten.

Strap wrench is the way to go. Previous owner of my sc had a firestone oil filter on it. It was a pain to try to get off. I ended up going to a local auto parts store and getting a strap wrench.

Strap works just fine, but metal one's are the best bang for buk imo.

Had the same problem.Been changing oil filters on my cars for 35 years never had one as tight as the one on my SC. Use a strap wrench and grab the filter as close to the base as you can. I actually attached a pipe to the wrench handle as a breaker bar and I still had to give it all I had to prior it free.

awesome, thanks for the advice. how do you fit a strap wrench in that space though? it seems way to tight

if you have the stock intake you have tons of room, try going from the brake booster side and pulling up on the wrench. You can even get 2 hands on the filter if you put one arm around the brake booster side and one arm down by the power steering reservoir. Alot of times I can get a stubborn one off like that without resorting to the strap, sort of gorilla style.

Oh crap Scott. I didn't consider the model 300/400. I have a 400 and it's easy to get to the filter.

Last resort? Stab it with a large flathead. Straight through to the other wise. Won't slip ANYMORE!

You beat me to it. I would also recommend maybe a big pair of channel locks. Thats what I have and they work great but also limited to space as well.

400's are annoying to take the filter off especially if its tight because there's 2 or 3 lines directly under it. I always used a metal cap to attach to the end because with a ratchet, you get more torque into it to turn.

Yeah mine was a B to pull off too. Never had one this tight before, but I got it off with a strap wrench eventually.
