Default Thinking about 1992 SC 400...

Whats up guys,
I have the opportunity to pick up a 1992 SC 400 with 166k miles for 5k (maybe get it down to 3.5k or 4k). The owner had all the belts replaced a couple thousand miles ago and says the car runs perfectly (and I believe him bc he's a friend's friend). The cluster was replaced and the radio lighting was fixed recently too, theres a smalll tear on the driver seat but the exterior of the car is in good condition. I'm currently a student so reliability (and not having to fund major repairs) is my main concern... What do you guys think?
Thanks a lot in advance!

Pictures? If its completely stock, even with all the maintenance being done $5k is pretty high, especially for a 92. But I could be wrong, but I would probably pay $3k personally..

But post pictures up that would be a great help.

Yeh I also think that sounds a little to high also. I think 3k seems pretty decent. 3500 if its in pretty good shape.

Just to put it in perspective... I paid $2000 for a 92 5-speed with a torn seat and cracked taillight and 204k miles. You can do much better on price if you look carefully.

I have to disagree on the price. Look at the recent NADA or KBB people. I just posted about the market on the 1992's have gone up in price. If you can get a better price than above, your golden. JMO. If the proof was done on the service records, I say go for it. They are a real reliable car, but like anything, it will break down eventually, like all vehicles.

Thanks a lot for the responses guys, really appreciate the input!
I definitely want to negotiate the price but was trying to get a good idea of what would be fair to me AND him. Seems around 3k is what you guys are recommending...

What kind of specific other questions should I ask him? I knew to check about the cluster/radio lighting and the engine maintenance, but any other big ticket items I HAVE to know abou and be aware oft?

So a car that's beaten to hell will get $2k but somehow $4k is too much for a car in great cosmetic shape with all maintenance done? What other premium car could you buy for that price that is ready for another 100k miles?

If you want an example of a gas-and-go SC, this is it. You just don't get a better $4k car -- I don't care who makes it. Find me a car that's in that shape for $2k and I'll buy it!

I think thats a clean SC for that price. If the maintenance checks out I would scoop it up.
