I understand Lexus doesn't carry its own strut for the SC400. Any suggestions on the best performance strut on the market? Any thoughts on the KYB Strut.

 

Tokicko blue is a good option and they are shocks not struts so that may help in your search.

 

KYB struts with Espelir springs go so low. No wheel gap at all. Fliptrix is rolling on it. I have Tokico blues with Tanabe springs, still riding high, but I love the ride.

 

If you go with lower springs, then use the springs from Supra 93-98. Then you can use any shock/strut from the Supra. The reason is lower springs from SC won't fit on Supra shock or vice versa. Shock or strut to me are the same. Supra has many more options than the SC.

 

Yes, supra has more options. If you dont plan on replacing your stock springs get some tokico blues or any tokico shock thats who makes our stock shocks with a slightly stiffer rates which is great!
If you got deeper pockets and want more performance out of your car, look into supra shock/spring or even coilover setups.
You cant mix and match supra and sc parts, its either supra or sc. They both have different size perches on the shocks and different width spring bottoms as well has half inch difference of perch location.

 

If your asking for whats the best on the market go for bilsteins or koni shocks/struts.

a good entry level set is the koni orange (strts) and of course you cant beat the bilstein hds

 

Just adding to what LEXXIUM is saying. SC's are built on the same chassis as the Supra, But the Shocks & spring perches are different. So YES both will bolt up, but you have to dicide which one your gonna go with. Supra springs & shocks, or SC springs and shocks. I say if you wanna go low w/o going coilovers, then go with the Supra stuff. Also EFF Espelir's or whatever they are called, thats just LOW riding CACA...

 

If you are looking for an OEM ride when using the original springs then stay away from the KYB's. I had them and promptly sold them.

 

What is the problem with the ride on the KYB's? Too soft or too stiff?

 

KYB's gave a ride that was harsh when compared to OEM.

 

KYB GR2 are THE OEM shocks/struts for the SC400. I have them and they ride nice even with the original springs witch I plan on upgrading to Tanabe for a tasteful drop with rockin smooth ride by winter.

KYB does make the OEM struts. However, the KYB GR2 that is commercially available is NOT the SAME strut as available from Toyota/Lexus. I cannot tell you what the exact difference is mechanically but I can attest to the difference is ride quality.

The KYB was not insufferable by any means but it was not what I had come to expect and enjoy in my SC400.
You might think that the ride is fine. The price is not that much better for the front struts.

I believe that KYB is around $60 each.

OEM are about $60.00 for the front and $130 for the rear each. So for an extra $150.00 (approx) I went with OEM.

Interestingly. I subsequently changed to SupraTT OEM suspension which gave my a combination of a good ride and better handling. I also added the TT swaybars and the call feels great!

my '98 SC3 struts had 142,000 on 'em, they were KYB, I picked up 4 struts from an SC4, KYB's, with 80,000 miles and Tanabe springs with 5,000 miles on 'em from a CL member, big difference from what i had, whenever I replace the struts I'll do Tokico blues.
