They probably control shifting from 1st through 3rd gears.

**** i was looking at a hand drawn diagram of what the apropriate number for each solenoid is, but then i came across another drawing that is a real diagram out of a book or something. So now im confused, are the big solenoids 1 and 2 or is it the small ones?

Ok i found the correct numbering for the solenoids, the 2 small ones are #1 and #2 and the 2 Big solenoids are #3 and #4. Do the 2 Big solenoids have anything to do with shifting or making the trans down shift?

Yes, all the solenoids control an assigned up or downshift. Do you know how to check the resistance of each solenoid to determine if it is good or bad? You have to drain all the transmission fluid out and then remove the transmission pan to gain access to the solenoids.

It's possible to have good solenoids but one of the fluid passageways might be blocked. If that's the case you're probably going to need a rebuilt transmission.

If you decide to drop the pan and check solenoid resistance you can also apply power and ground to each solenoid and listen for a "click" to see if the solenoid is stuck open or closed.
