how many gallons is the gas tank?? i was lead to believe that it's 20 but now i'm jus not sure anymore. I drive around and looking at the gauge it appears to be way past the last hash mark on the meter but when i fill up i cant get it pass 18 gallons.
I used to go until the light came on, and even then I would only fill up about 16 gallons. One time I got 19.995 gallons, but I don't remember if that was in my truck, or my lex.
Yesterday I put in 19.78 gallons in, and that was because I ran it a bit on the light. $30 bucks worth. The manual says 20.4 gallons, and some people have worked out the reserve (when the light comes on the reserve starts) to be around 3.5 gallons. Don't go that low. A friend of mine in an S-10 ran it out and his electric fuel pump flew apart internaly. Had to pull the bed to replace that honey. I never feel comfortable with the light on, so I try to fill her back up around a quarter tank.
It's generally bad to run on empty. The gas tank is pressurized, therefore when you're running on fumes, you're sucking in more of the contaminants that build up in the gas tank. Those contaminants don't do squat in the tnak, but when they get sucked into the engine, it's all bad. It's safer to fill around half to a quarter tank where you're still sucking up clean gasoline.
I think it's great that Lexus made it so hard to run these cars out of gas. My estimate of reserve when the little light comes on is also 3.5 gallons - that's over 70 miles to find gas after the light comes on.
I mean, we Lexus drivers would find running out of gas *so inconvenient* - -
The fuel pump is cooled by the fuel that passes through it. Also, it pumps more fuel than the engine can burn and the remaining fuel returns to the tank. The fuel is heated by engine heatsoak during its circuit through the rail and back to the tank, and the lower the level is in the tank, the higher the ambient temp of the fuel in the tank will get, especially if the car is driven hard for an extended period on a hot day. The warmer the fuel, the less cooling it can provide for the pump, and yes - if you run out of fuel, you may cook the pump - - $$$

You are in Sacramento, home of the Team-that-really-beat-the-Lakers-but-the-refs-gave-it-away. I am in Arkansas. Premium here is 1.52 a gallon.
Gas is $2.33 in Sactown??? It's like $1.61 in San Francisco Bay. Ain't that a biitch, Camshaft is paying $1.52 for 93-95 octane gas, and we're paying around $2.00 for cheesy 91...
