Cute. At first I saw this with no sound and thought it was some dumb joke. But after listening to it for a second time around, all the lost was in the commentary. Quite interesting being as how I didn't know that's how they designed it. Quite a novel idea.

They have a ten minute version of that on youtube somewhere, its awesome. That explains it all right there though, thats why the cars don't look 17 years old.

I've seen the video as well (the dealer intro one) but I think the styling was strongly influenced by the 5th gen Celica that was all about curves and round edges. It was the first mass production car on the road to have that as a theme all over the car.

The Calty studio in SoCal actually designed the 2nd gen Celica back in the 70s and one is on display at the Petersen Museum in LA. I saw it and a small display on all of the cars from that studio when I was in SoCal earlier this year.

I did not get time to go to the Toyota Museum in Torrance but if someone lives in the area it seems worth a look.

I still credit the nothing but round edges to the 1967 Toyota 2000GT as a design theme.

At about 7 grand in 1967 it was a rich man's toy. To put that into perspective about $16K bought you a new 3 bedroom house in the burbs in those days.

Technically there were three. Just the middle one wasn't a huge departure from the first one.
