So I'm getting exhaust work done in 2 days. My idea is to cut out each Y-pipe and remove the center cat. In its place will be an X-pipe and 2.25" standard piping. From there I was thinking of keeping the stock resonators and then running straight pipes in place of the mufflers. Then maybe throw some simple tips on the end to make it look clean.
How does this sound or should I look into deleting the stock resonators but keep the mufflers?
Here you go; $60 at local muffler shop.
Cut out center section before Y, and after Y, weld in 2" pipe sections with a crossover at exactly the same place where the first Y was.
No drone, sporty rasp at full throttle on slightly ported 4.0.
The stock mufflers are straight thru just like aftermarket ones, so why would you make more of a project out of it, it's an exhaust?
I have a bone stock 98 SC400 which now needs some extensive exhaust work due to many broken weld points. I want to keep it simple and not dump a ton of money into the project as this is my daily driver with almost 200k. I'm wondering what you all would suggest as the local muffler shop told me to contact a custom shop for the work to be done. I also have concerns about emissions, I live in Illinois, so not as restrictive as you guys in CA.
SCV8's suggestion sounds simple enough, but what can I actually get away with?
aussievern also suggested putting a single cat at the end of the exhaust pipe instead of the duals on each side at the end of the manifold.
Any of your thoughts and suggestions, as well as parts selections would be greatly appreciated.
Looking for any info regarding doing any X-pipe setups on a 2jz GE
Has any body actually Done an X-pipe (or true dual, three cylinders per side) set up on an N/A 2jz plant? If you did how did it turn out was there any back pressure loss, what can did you use if any other then factory, and what pipe diameter?
I just bought a stock 1995 Sc300.
That said I am unfamiliar with how the stock exhaust should sound.
Upon acceleration I get a low growl. It does not sound like an exhaust issue. I sounds like the exhaust is tuned to make the sound. I just like that confirmed from someone with a stock exhaust.
Thank you!

The stock exhaust sounds fairly sporty up until 3500 then it's just dead quiet. It's enough to keep you interested but not enough to get the blood pumping lol
