Question Eibach installation

I am going to order my Eibach pro-kit springs some time this week and I am in question to where I could have them installed at. I was thinking about doing it myself, but I know nothing about suspension. Then I was thinking of a local tire shop, but I have head stories where the rear sway bars were incorrectly re-installed and one side of the car being 2in different than the other. Soo.... I was thinking maybe my lexus dealership could install them. I figure they wouldent skrew up the installation. Plus i am dure for an oil change in a week or so i could have them install the springs while my car is already there. Would the dealership do this? Do they install aftermarket products on their cars? Thanks for the help.

Likely the lex dealer is going to tell you no. They will almost never install aftermarket parts. Try a Midas or Meinke type place. That way its a big company to go after if they break something. It's not easy to call the HQ of a garage, when Bubba did the work, and his uncle Cleatus owns the place.

Odd that you say this. My Lexus dealer has installed aftermarket parts on my SC. Tokico struts as an example. They have also told me they would install aftermarket springs as well. They will not warantee the parts however. In other words if the strut leaked they do not want to know about it as it was not ordered from them.

They have told me that they have installed Millen parts on other Lexus' as well as L-Tuned parts which were brought in by owners and not ordered thru them.

They give you an estimate of the expected labor an consumables before the work is done.

If you are having the work done by a mechanic outside of Lexus, you may want to provide the mechanic with the critical bolt torque settings. Also, if you are changing the springs, this is the opportune time to change struts if you need them. Also check out the strut boots which are rubber and protect the upper shock rod from splash.

If you do this on your own, I do suggest you get a shop manual. There is for instance, if memory serves me, a need to align the suspension after a strut / coil change. Little known fact.

Well I know Johnson Lexus in Raleigh, NC, and JM lexus here in southern Florida sure won't touch aftermarket parts. They wouldn't even take off my strut tower bar to change the timing belt...since it was aftermarket. :/

If your dealer will do it, go for it! It may cost more, but you've got Lexus quality mechanics.

Default struts

Well, i am going to call them tomarrow and set up an appointment for an oil change and I will ask them about installing springs and struts. I have yet to change my struts, and I seriously doubt my dad has. So, where could I order a pair of Tokico struts. I'm sure I need them. Thanks for the help.

ChrisSC300,

Did you already order the Eibach Pro-Kit?

I will have one ready for sale once I swap my existing kit with coilovers.

I also have a set of Eibach springs for MKIV Supra.

Just letting you know.

Don't even think of doing it yourself unless you know whas sup. I'm currently driving Lexus 97 Sc. I too purchased eibach prokit springs. I paid cheap $229. It was very difficult to install since I started fresh. If you try to do it yourself without knowing anything, you'll most likely to kill both front stabilizer links. It's a small toothpick like with I think ball joints at each ends. They won't look like their broken, but once you put them back on, you'll hear a loud *** knocking noise everytime the car runs on bumbs. Very annoying. And if you were to take it to the Lexus dealer to diagn., they'll tell you to spend approx $1500 to replace the upper and lower control arms of both front sides.. that was bullshiet. I paid $200 to replace both toothpicks. I guess the most important thing to avoid damage to the links is to make sure take em out carefully. I thought i didn't need to remove em, and therefore, kept yanking on bone. NOPE!!! Anyhow, prokits gave me a stupid *** ride. Im not sure whether it's because of stock shocks or not. I had to remove the rear ones just to better ride the lex. good luck buddy..

Replacing sport spings w/ stock struts will cause nothing but problems. You MUST buy a matched set of springs and struts.

Eibachs are excellent springs - I hear a lot of people complaining about them, but they are the ones who don't seem to understand how a suspension actually works. Either they install them improperly, or use them with the wrong strut.

I've had my Eibackl/Tokico for over 2 years now and have nothing but good things to say about them. They keep a close to stock feel. A little stiffer, but not unbearable and hardly noticable. And contrary to popular belief, my car isn't unlevel, they were a snap to install, and the springs don't bang on anything. I have NEVER bottomed out or scraped my front lip either. The car is lowered 3/4 - 1" and it isn't slammed by any sence of the term.

I like them; other may not. I knew what I was doing when I installed them; others may not. You decide what you like/need. Just make sure they are installed right the first time. If something seems hard, most likely you're doing something wrong.

Hope it helps,
Keith

Keith, where did you get your Tokico struts from? I plan on putting on new springs and struts as soon as i find a place to order them from.

I'm thinking of trying to do the install myself as well and from looking at the shop manual procedure it does not look very hard as far as the installation goes and I've read it over and over a couple times basically by the manual the only special tool that you will need is a spring compressor and a torque wrench ...the only thing is the alignment check when it is complete but even if the alignment has to be done at a pro shop that's not nearly as much as having the entire job done elswhere where they charge 350.00 per pair ...if anyone needs the procedure from the lexus manual let me know ...my car is a '94 but I'm pretty sure the procedure is the same for all years

C_Irie,

I am thinking of replacing the struts myself if possible. I will give this a try before shelling out additional $200 for the shop to replace them for me.

Since you mentioned about the shop manual, I would appreciate it if you can either send/post how to replace springs/struts yourself.

Thanks in advance.

Peter

LEXO400sc,

where did you find the Eibach kits for that price? Wow, the lowest I found was around $350 and the highest price? Well over $450...

ChrisSC300,

You can find the springs at shox.com, overboost.com, optauto.com, carparts.com, etc.

I think on average, you can find one for about $75.

www.shox.com quoted 269.00 for the eibach set

www.tirerack.com wanted 309.00

I'll post the procedure tommorow for the rear and the front if I have enough time
