also did you pull out the distributer?? it could be installed off if you touched that also if you used the cheap rotor you could be off 180 degrees double check your plugs first and make sure the firing order is right
download this service repair manual. http://www.supraforums.com/forum/sho...d.php?t=362377
its for the supra but engine wise its the same
to answer your question the cam marks should be pointing straight up (theres 2 small notches on the metal cover behind the cam gears)
with the 2 cam marks pointing up the crank pulley should be on the "0" mark
if you did pull the distributor, its easy to install it 1 tooth off. recheck it

ok well first check to make sure the crank pulley is lined up on the white mark to tdc then see the two little triangles on the cams those need to be lined up with the two indentations at tdc on the black metal piece that covers the cam seals and that way bot hteh crank and the cams are at tdc if they dion't line up then thats your culprit
i lined up like you said and it/s way off and the belt is lose so thats my prolbem so whem i install new belt do i line up the way you said and thanks your a live saver it/s my sons car and he loves it

yes you line it up exactly that way fortunately the motor is a non interferance so just turn it easily and don't force it you will feel a bit of resistance but that will most likely be compression.... and the belt should be tight i usually recommend to change the tensioner when i do timing belts if there is still slack when you install it then i'd say change that too.....btw thats what a honest mechanic does we're in the industry to help people not rip them the hell off.... too bad there isn't more of us here nowadays
