My mechanic told me I was due for a belt I have almost 97,000 miles on my 92 sc400. He looked under the hood and told me I have a chain and not a belt. Do 92 sc400's have a belt or chain?

 

find a new mechanic.

 

Ya thats definately a good idea, find another mechanic......my 96 maxima had a chain, its a shame, those last longer, why didnt all cars use them?

I prefer gears. It's noiser but there is basicalyl a zippy chance of it slipping/jumping or breaking. You can get some quiet gears too so it dosent realyl sound that different. Look the stuff in the summit racing catalogue.

For simplicity, got belt. Chains are a nice compromise for durability. Gears are basically bulletproof for a long time.

 

until 1400 rwhp MKIV supras start needing timing chains instead of belts, I'll stick with my stock belt .

 

I am taking it to lexus for the timing belt and water pump. I have 97000 on it so I am hoping nothing happens to it before the middle of June

 

I'm with Gazi on this one. Timing belts and timing chains look nothing alike.

Traci, the dealer is going to rape your pockets, literally. The car is 14 years old, there's no need for the dealer to do this job. I just had a new timing belt, water pump, and front cam seals changed on my 300 and it was $450 from my mechanic using all OEM parts. I'm sure the dealer will charge you 3x as much for the same work. Shop around and ask members in your area to point you in the right direction.

 

my brother can do it for the price mikeloc mentioned, the dealer will rape you dry.

 

I changed my rubber timing belts out myself at 100,000 on my 92 SC400.. I am your basic weekend back yard mechanic...Learn on the fly........Changing the belts is not that hard once all that plastic crap is removed around the engine bay area...When I changed my original timing belts I noticed they were still in good shape considering they were 14 years old.....They are well protected from the elements and hold up much longer then factor spec's say... My guess is I could have ran my original 92 belts to probably around 200,000 from the way they looked, no cracking or shreading... Just something to think about....Also when your belts are removed you should consider changing the caps and rotors as they are right there and so easy to replace at that time...

Find an import mechanic and not domestic, they should know the difference between rubber and chain timing belts.....

 

I can vouch for Gazi's bro. Good work, great price. Deffinitely DO NOT bring it to the dealer. Dealer will charge $1200 and up for this (not including water pump). No need. The price for the parts are less than $100 (minus water pump).

 

Called Lexus I got a price of $750.00 for timing belt,water pump and service

 

still a rip off, unless you are loaded.

 

God I wish I was loaded. My Mechanic wanted more then $750.00 I can't do it myself because I have no idea how to do it
